You did the same thing I did. The side panel flexed in enough to touch the spinning drive clutch and bust a hole in your panel. Put your float plate back on and buy a new panel. You can try to fix it if the hole isn't bad but keep in mind anything you patch it with could get sucked into your...
After talking to my buddy last night I did confuse the issue. The guys I heard about eliminated reverse for reliability for the Iron Dog and also wanted to gear the sleds up for more speed. Something about needing a Cat jackshaft to allow for more gearing choices. The Cat and Viper jackshafts...
I'd have to double check about the specifics but as I understood it, if you remove reverse on a Viper you've got to run a Cat driven clutch because the jackshafts are different between the ZR 7000 and Viper. Cat parts allow for the removal of reverse.
It is not my intention to start anything but don't bash on Banks for his post. I was also blue blinded and then I bought my RMK 600. That sled has been pull and go. I changed some things like skis for personal preference but I really didn't need to. I back the thing out of my shop with the no...
I think you made the right decision. If anything it will give you time to think about things, read more ride reviews and see how the Viper does as people put more and more miles on them. I don't see you not being able to find a Viper this spring. I thought the Nytro would be a hot seller back in...
A few years ago I had a friend who had a newer Triumph street bike. He liked the bike but wanted a new Yamaha sport touring bike. He resigned himself to not ordering the Yamaha until the Triumph sold for what he wanted. It took several months but the "right" guy finally saw the ad and called and...
I don't think your resale is going to be that much different next year. After a certain amount of time depreciation starts leveling out somewhat and a buyer in the used market isn't going to care if the Apex is an '06 or '07 or '08, etc. They are going to be shopping the condition of the sled in...
I'll play devil's advocate here and make sure you don't "buy in haste and repent in leisure". You just fixed up your Apex. Financially it would make more sense to ride it another year to help get your money back out of it. I don't know what Apex's are worth in your area but make sure you don't...
I'd wait, next year's Viper will be better as they will have discovered and worked through the minor issues. You'll also be able to see what comes out for '15. Might be something you like better and you can snow check. Generally you get a longer warranty when you snowcheck.
Who knows? Maybe...
I was expecting much better results for a lake race on ice.

Thanks for posting, For me it is discouraging to see it take 30 freaking minutes to do something that takes less than 5 on most sleds. For me I'd rather the Viper be offered with a lever for reverse. Lighter and simpler and I could check and add oil pretty easily on both my Vector and Nytro.
Another thing I don't understand is how the Viper is not any lighter than a Nytro? As I recall last spring the Viper was supposed to be 20-30 lbs lighter than a Nytro. I think I even remember reading something like that on the Sled Talk Blog. The naked Viper chassis looks so much lighter than...
At least they finally listed the weight. Seems like it is no lighter than a Nytro RTX in dry weight and heavier in curb (wet) weight likely due to the larger gas tank. There is slightly over a gallon difference between actual and rated capacities for the gas tank, I wonder what that means...
I've not looked at a Viper chaincase in person and assumed they used a dipstick like every other sled I've owned since '96. My buddy is helping set up some Vipers for the Iron Dog and mentioned the differences in the chaincase from Cat. The Iron Dog team was pulling reverse to increase...
My understanding is the Viper chaincase is a whole different animal. It isn't the standard Cat chaincase and it isn't built like the one Yamaha uses in the Deltabox chassis or the Nytro. I'd at least call the dealer and let them know what happened. They might want you to bring it in. Also check...
I've been pretty interested to see how the Viper works out for everyone this season. Not many ride reports so far. I loved the motor in my Nytro but grew to dislike the chassis more and more in the 4 seasons I rode it. I also discovered I don't even put 4000 miles on sled before I'm ready and...
I recently went for a 30 mile ride on the closest thing we have to a groomed trail similar to what you see in pictures Quebec. I could see how a guy would like an Apex. There was nothing technical to the ride, no rough areas, it was like riding a motorcycle down a two lane road. I can see why...
I could see them wanting both teams running the same sled. Way easier for prep, tuning and parts support along the 2000 mile course.
I was really hoping this would be the year we'd see a 4-stroke crack the top 5. On paper a 4-stroke is THE sled for this race. It never seems to work out that...
