Anybody do any mods to their airboxs on the 3 cyl. 4S engines to let a little more air in? My sled runs a little rich, and rather than jet down, I'd rather mod the box or I'm thinking of going to a Tempaflow.

Jim, you don't want to mod the Vector box. The stock box flows very well and unlike the 4 cylinder, any modifications to the Vector box decreases performance dramatically. Also, unlike 2 strokes, these engines run well on the rich side.

Mike,
Thanks for the heads up. What prompted me to ask this is the plugs I saw on 12/23 out of a 2006 Vector. THey were bordering on the too lean side IMO...gray'ish (temps were 33 pretty much all day) . Mine are polar opposite of those, typically running on the dark tan (make sense?) to black side.
Am I off base in my thinking that I should be running a nice tan plug? Or doesn't it really matter on a 4S?

Good question. Anyone have an opinion what these should look like?
Mine are always dark when I check them too. However I only pull them out when I have issues like after storage when I start to foul a plug from moving it around. A lot of it depends on when you check them. Ideally you want to inspect a plug after a good run without letting the sled idle much or see low speed riding before pulling them.

..to the dark tan side for me; and the original plugs too except one (after 11000 km)
beside that, should mention that my EGT indicates cylinder 3 25 degrees cooler than #2 which is 25 degrees cooler than #1 (from left to right numbering) which tells us again that the breather tube in the airbox is in the air path of #2 & #3. So in my opignon, yes, there is some to do with the airbox, at least some fine tuning.

Dark brown are ok. Like twomorestrokes mentioned above, your plugs should be checked after a good run, high speed or just trail cruising for awhile. Pull to the side of the trail and pull the plugs and inspect. How long had the sled run befor you inspected them. Again Dark brown is good. I richened mine (main jets) and lost top end, to rich. They could stand to be richened up on the low end. Stock main jet for stock engine is ok. Just my 2 cents.
carbs
I don't think there jetted that fat.I ran the same jetting in the summer asphalt racing a 1/4 mile at a time.I had cr10ek plugs in though.
Did you sync your carbs.Mine where way off.It cleaned up the bottom end a lot and was more crisp it also idled a lot smoother.

What do you need to syncronize the carbs and where can I get it?
carb sync
I'm not shure who all sells them. Are you coming on the muuni ty ride.Usually about 20 sled get done or at night when everyone is hanging out.

airbox mod.
My buddy works part time for a 5 star yamaha dealer in northern maine and he says to not touch the airbox on the vectors. The performance will be worse then stock. Works on the 4 cylinders but not the vectors.

Re: carbs
My sled doesn't idle as good as I thnik it should. Interesting that the wrench at Antigo Yamaha said the carbs didn't neen to be synched when I asked him about it. I guess I need to check into it,
Another reason I'm asking this question is that my MPG is typically in the 15-16 range....not the 18-20 that people claim they're getting. OK, I can be pretty heavy on the thumb sometimes, but most times I'm not. THe other day I was getting beat MPG wise by a Doo 600 SDI. Yes that motor gets good MPG, but he was beating me by 2-3 MPG.

The worst milage I can remember getting was 17 on a day of hard riding. It's usually 19-20.

So what are the things on my sled vs. yours that are contributors to my getting poorer MPG? Carb synch? Jetting? Needles?

I will give you some advice I bought a couple sleds from antigo yamaha they have the worst mechanics I ever seen.MY buddies ski-doo secondary spring was recalled they put the clutch back together and didn't even twist it to put preload on it,lol.
