Gotta love internal combustion engines! Two strokes with valves have been experimented with. Cost is a factor when changing to new tech as well as patents. This is a supercharged two stroke diesel engine. What I talked about places the intake and exhaust on each side of the cylinder head using a pentroof swirl type design with rotary valves to open and close the ports. Supercharger is needed to fill the cylinders but high boost pressure is not!
In that sequence, it looks like the air is forced in, compressed, fuel added and ignited, and the blower forces the exhaust out the 2 exhaust valves at the top once the piston clears the intake port...so you really need the blower to purge the exhaust....cat had an interesting idea of injecting through the piston or something, plus injection in the chamber. Just briefly read about it, but it doesn't have pressurized bearings/journals, which like you said, is the key to engine life. This stuff is very interesting. And a triple would sound great, as they always had.
