OK I'm just trying to figure out why I haven't seen any performance cams, ignition systems or basic bolt performance parts for these new breeds of sleds. Is it really that Yamaha has done such a good job on the motor that no one can improve on it?? or is it that I'm having no luck finding stuff? I love my sled but I wouldn't mind dropping $$$ for some cheap reliable hp. $5000 on a turbo as cool as it sounds is out of the question for the average Joe. Never mind the fact that winters in New England seem to be getting shorter and shorter. All I know is that slapping a cam and pipe on a new 4stroke quad makes a night and day difference. Why not a sled

4-wheelers are NOT performance engines, it is EASY AND CHEAP to make a cam to boost performance. On these engines, it is not so easy and not so cheap. Cams are available for RX1 03-05, and possibly for 06+, but they are so expensive that it makes more sense for most to get a blower.

Give Kieth Woody a call (Woody's Performance) (207)729-1177. He's got a clutch set up that will give you 5 MPH on top and get you there faster if you re-gear.

I haven't seen much in the way of cams or bolt-ons outside of clutching/gearing changes and forced induction/exhaust mods. But I'm pretty surprised there hasn't been more talk of people boosting these electronically...especially with the EFI setup. With EFI it's usually easier to find the cheapest HP in a computer, rather than producing and buying hard parts. Shouldn't be very difficult on the Genesis since my Yami manual states they only need 86 octane fuel...that's a strong indicator there's some potential for more there with a simple reprogram and no forced induction. Just advance the ignition timing and adjust the fuel curve...set it up to run on 91+ octane only, and a few more HP should be easy to find right there. Such tweaks often result in an equal gain in fuel economy. Works well on every truck I've ever owned anyway, and usually only costs a few hundred bucks to buy the chip or programmer, and then you're married to premium fuel for life which is not a big deal IMO.

Hopefully someone will start tweaking these some more now that they've been on the market a little while. Didn't Supertuner mess with that stuff on an Apex a while back and was sharing some of his results? Not sure that I ever read that he got it fully dialed in though.

To anyone who's reading this and is considering diving into the market...count me in as an interested customer...

I'm not talking your run of the mill 4x4 utility quad or the kids yamaha warrior down the street. I'm talking about the new 450 motors that have been coming out from all the manufactures. granted Yamaha has had thiers out for a few years and has time to fine tune, but it just doesn't seem right that there isn't more out there to choose from for performance parts still. How many different pipes are out now 1-2. I understand that maybe you can't get big numbers with just a pipe but what about a cam or a cam mod or a ECU something else. as for being to expensive come on. I'd rather drop $1000 for a cam and good dual exhaust system than spend $5000 for a turbo. sure an extra 90hp would be fun on the trail but I think realisticly 15-20 would get the same results and save at the pump.

SpecRTX

I currently have one of Ulmer's Stage ll kits in my RTX and so far I've been happy although I have nothing to compare to and I think I'm back to being the only member in my local club with a Yami. Thanks for the tip though if I'm ever looking for a change I'll give them a shout.

There are items coming! Testing is taking place as we speak!

So am I. If those were built to be powerful, they'd be pushing 60 hp. Instead, they come out of the box at 15-20 ish. They're just a little stronger per cc than lawnmower engines.

I don't want to get into a pissing contest with you about, but you should really do your home work before making a statement like that. The new breed of 450s are pushing 45-60 with easy mods

Srxspec- Is that an item you plan to carry? please keep us updated. I'm already compiling a list for you.

with easy mods
As I was saying, stock, ~15. 660's stock 25. Are those easy mods turbo's or nox? And believe me here, I *HAVE* a 450. Top out at 85kph certainly isn't 50hp. You ever see those little cars on the road... SMART... they're 40 hp and have NO TROUBLE AT ALL running with the highway - at about 3 times the weight of a typical ATV. You want to take another guess about ATV horsepower?

rafikie, yes it will be an item that we carry. We have the first prototype. There are a lot of neat options that will be available as well.

Edit: A stock Yamaha YFZ 450 quad is rated at 39 hp at the crank from the factory.

Like LB said.. there are cams available.. but they are expensive and difficult to install.. (definitly not for the average joe) and would require clutching changes as well because it raises the rpm range..

You could talk to NOSPRO and he could help you install a dry nitros setup..

wait around and find a used turbo setup or supercharger..
