Primary clutch and belt in action videos...a must see

Was able to finally put my tiny camera to work this weekend, showing how a primary clutch works.

In this video, you can see the belt at a stand still, then start to ride up the primary clutch sheaves. This run was about a smooth roll to about 1/2 throttle and then a short full throttle. You can see how the belt gets up to the top of the sheaves rather quick. Towards the end of the video, I had to apply the brakes to slow down....this is where the clutch and belt really start to jump around. If you have belt marks on your clutch guard, this is from applying the brakes hard. Speed was about 95mph max. (not a full throttle pass)

This next video is just a general cruise down a field with a couple of surprise hidden hills that made me back off rather quick and touch the brake. You can see how the front end gets closer to the ground as the outside light gets a little darker when the front end dives. Lots of stuff going on here and crazy to see the punishment a clutch and a belt goes thru....even at slow speeds.

This camera that I used is very small, not expensive at all and can be used as a bore scope, or anything you want to use it on. The camera has 6 LED lights at the tip around the camera which can be dialed down so it's not blinding or glaring off of the shiny surfaces. Speaking of shiny surfaces...my primary clutch looks like a mirror :)

Way too cool! To see this live like this puts things in perspective and seeing it makes me wonder how belts actually hold up as well as they do and don't go to shits after every outing ! :). Thanks for the video / insight!
 
Very cool videos!!! 20+ years of riding and that's the first time I've really seen a drive belt under load, crazy what they go through!
 
Great videos Terry! Perfect timing for me as I just had to replace my primary. I just picked up a new go pro last week.
 
Nice videos. A lot safer than watching it on a stand or track dyno. Not that any of us have ever done that o_O
 
I thought about putting my Go-Pro in there somewhere...but this camera only cost $38 or so.....far cry from $400 if something were to go wrong.

Ding - so much safer and watching it on the stand doesn't compare to driving down the trail
 
Nice job Terry. It is easy to see the amount of time it take to start the back shift process when you let off the throttle. Are you going to try and set it up to look at what the secondary does sometime?

It really is amazing at how sensitive these clutches are! Very cool!
 
Hopefully I can get some really crazy videos going from testing in my yard. Plus some secondary vids.
 
Excellent job with these videos. Really appreciate the time that you took to record these and especially to post them up and share them. I always wondered what caused the belt marks on my clutch guard. Now I know. ;)!

Those drive belts take more abuse then my pants belt does every winter after I gain 10 pounds. :dunno:
