I have a 2006 Apex and was wondering what I could do to make the seat more comfy , the padding is shot , what year did Yamaha improve the padding in the seat , 2009 ? , I may just buy a 09 seat.

I believe it was later than that, maybe 2011 but I also think they added foam or firmed it up more in 2012 too?
There is also this option which I haven't gotten around to myself, but plan to sometime soon.

I just bought a 2010 apex seat for my 07 apex gt, a few years back i had the seat raised and stiffened a bit but i didn't like it for trail riding at speeds over the sutters, the stock seat is way more comfy for me, I could of softened my seat back but decided to by a new one,
the dealer i got it from told me the 2010 will be the same as the 07 but it feels more firm then an 07 seat, its new but there is a difference, I think...

The best value for your $ are the Apex mountain seats. I just bought 2, one for my Apex and one for my Attack. Im 6 4" 215 without gear and these seats lifted my seating position at least 2-3". Far more comfortable to ride with and firmer all round. I found one on Ebay that had a tore cover and got it for just over $100. I took the cover of my existing sled and placed the foam and insert from the tore mountain seat in my Apex seat. It isnt the foam thats different. The mountain seats have styrofoam in the very bottom of the seat cavity that the foam sits in. Its about 2 -3" or so thick and its moulded to fit in the V of the bottom of the seat cavity. The foam of the mountain seat has the bottom where the styrofoam sits cut out to match it but otherwise the foam from both seats has the same consistency. The styrofoam is what gives it the firmer seating position. I rang to have extra foam added to my existing seat and was quoted $500 per seat for the extra foam and a modified cover to suit. The mountain seat will more than likely get you where you need for far less and you can keep the standard appearance of your factory seat. You can tell a mountain seat as they have shorter rear tail light cable than a Apex seat and you can see the foam in the bottom of the seat cavity through the 2 holes under the tabs that slide under the fuel tank.

- 2014 Viper RTX SE (sold)
I switched seats (back when I had my Apex). If I remember right...starting in 2007 the Apex RTX seat was stiffer in comparision to the GT/ER seats. I remember the one I bought was quite stiffer than the 2006 ER seat but-I actually found it to be too stiff.

The seats I found were both of 2007 mountain sleds. Im not sure which year they stopped doing this. Apparently the foam insert is something that Boss originally did with their seats.
Here are are couple pics of the foam insert and the shorter cable. See the tail light cable from the mountain seat exits about halfway along the seat instead of at the rear in the tail light pod like they do on a ER Apex. If you look closely in the cable pic you will also see the styrofoam is visible under the tabs that slide beneath the fuel tank. On a ER seat under the tabs you will see the tan color of the foam as the foam fills the cavity area that the styrofoam is sitting in.
The shorter cable will actually just make it to the rear tail light but you will have to remove the tape holding the cable to the seat mould, pull the cable along towards the back of the seat a little and run the tail lights cable along the side of the seat for it to reach it.

I was lucky enough to feel and compare an RTX seat with a mountain seat and the RTX isnt as firm but is firmer than the standard ER seats. I dont know why this is as I havent had the chance to take the cover of an RTX. I guess depending on your weight these seats may well seem too firm but for those looking for some extra height without modifying the look of your original seat the mountain - RTX seats are a viable and affordable option, providing you can find them.
