Can anyone explain how the Yamaha part numbers work? For instance, I was trying to figure out if a gear from a 97 VMAX was the same for the 03 RX1 and both gears had the same middle number but different prefixes and suffixes (8FB-47587-80-00 vs 8CW-47587-90-00). Sometimes I will give the dealer a number from the Yamaha website and they have a different suffix too, is that a revision level?

here you are the first 3 # are for the model with the part goes to. the next 5#'s are the part belt , CDI, head ect the next 2#'s are for production and changes to the part, hope this helps.

So, if two different models use the same gear they will have different part numbers? I wonder how many times something is 'out of stock' but the identical item is on another shelf with a different number on it?

lots so that why you need to find a good yamaha parts guy who know what he is talking about.

so in the example the gear is the same? what about the difference in the two numbers following the set of five, one was 80 and the other 90

Thanks for your input

I think from what he is saying there is no way for us to tell if the gears are the same- only that they are both bottom gears by the middle number. Maybe Yamaha has a way to cross reference things like this? Doesn't seem like a very 'Lean' system on the surface, the gears must all be made by the same supplier so I hope they don't place orders in bits and pieces by model for the same parts. What I did notice by comparing some other part numbers is that the 80 and 90 designate a 38T and a 39T gear so that digit might mean number of teeth for gears.

yes you are correct i will try and find my sheet and post how the yamaha number work but there is no cross reference that i know of.
