Trail tank vs Tour buddy vs ???

Doo can carries as much extra gas as a trail tank and a lot cheaper. Not sure the price of the tour buddy but its kinda ugly in my opinion although it has its benefits.

I had a tour buddy, paid $189 for it. Like you said, ugly but functional! I couldn't take the look anymore so I sold it, lol.

I will have a kolpin/rotopax setup this year!

I went with kolpin jr. Fuel packs inexpensive and versityle. Not the best looking but usually only use then on tour rides

I went with the newer LinQ doo can. I looked at all the options: kolpin, tourbuddy, trail tank, old doo can, etc..., etc...
My preferred option would have been the trail tank but I chose not to due to the negative feedback associated with earlier production models and lack of feedback for the newer models. Price is a little higher for this option as well.

I ruled out the tourbuddy due to asthetics...

kolpin looked good but i was concerned about rumors re: leaking and while the hardware to secure it to the sled seem simmple and cool, it seemed like they may not hold the tank securely. With a little movement, I'm sure that it wouldn't be long before a system failure would be encountered. (I stayed away from kolpin copy cats due to negative feedback related to those I reviewed).

Pretty much the same kolpin related thoughts kept me away from the yamaha saddlebags.

As stated earlier, I ended up going with the doo LinQ system. The linQ system won't fit directly on the yamaha tunnel due to yamaha's angled edges reducing top tunnel width to less than 15". The post below shows pictures and what I made to secure the tank. I've got 1 full season behind me and am very pleased with it.

All said and done my 1st choice would be a hassle free trail tank and 2nd choice would be the doo LinQ.

see doo LinQ posts in the following thread:

Is that just the 'pack mount' on those. Any issues w/ them rattlin loose as suggested? Di you use rivets or bolts to mount them? Thanks.

I used the mounting brackets that came with them they hold them real tight, there's no leaking, they haven't come loose in 4500km of riding, and they don't rattle. Place them in snug, also I put a plastic pipe around the edge of the tunnel for a little extra protection. I mounted them with aluminum rivet nuts in the tunnel, stainless bolts and lock washers.

Had a Trail Tank on my previous Nytro with all the head aches that came with it already stated on other posts , I now have a Tour Buddy , its esthetics don't really bother me , maybe because my sled's all black it doesn't stand out as much . Where I ride in nothern Quebec just about every sled has something on the back shelf weather be it a luggage rack or fuel caddy of some sort , you rarely see one with nothing on the back .
Love the T Buddy , good range , easy to fill , don't have to transfer the fuel over, no spills , no fuss. Got mine from a guy who never installed it and was still new in the box for $ 90.00 , no regrets .

easy

I love my trailtank, yaking it off/on can be a little tricky when its hot and tank expands but, other than that mine works great.

I have had trail tanks on 2 of my Nytro's and would recommend them. They can be a little tough to install, but not that hard and then you have the fuel where you need it. No need to stop and have to dump your extra gas into the main tank, and then the same is true at the gas station, you have to fill the main tank and then foul around with filling your extra cans, that's a pain in the *ss! Have the Yamaha caddies on one of the Nytro's and would not do that again. Just my Opinion, hope it helps.

Tour buddy, 6500km with it on so far, have never had a problem with it, if you don't mind the look you won't be disappointed

Just put a new trail tank on both our Nytro xtxs. It was really easy to do and I'm glad I did it  I've read through all the old negative stuff and can tell you that they worked out all the kinks. I go slow and it took me 2 hours to do the first one and 45 minutes to do the second. You will probably need a screwdriver to turn the panel fittings at first, but they loosen right up after you work them a few times. Definitely the way to go :-o

Good to hear the trail tank has improved. I still would like to put one on but first I am just going with a LinQ can. Cheaper option for now for me and same amount of extra fuel.
