I have been watching your video's on youtube since November. They where so entertaining I decided to start a thread on here and TY 2 stroke forum to let everyone know about them. Then they pointed me to this thread. I'm glad you already have a following. Your video's are well edited, informative and best of all hilarious! Of course I had to read this whole thread and watch your video's a second time now. lol

When your track exploded you where a bit disappointed. I never had a mountain track so I'm not sure of the longevity but let me remind you of this.

The paddles could of tickle some rocks to cut their life a bit short? Thumbs Up

I knew the photo's and video's would catch up to me about part failures LOL Thanks for the kind words! That brings me to......

Yellowknife's 2008 - 2009 Mileage Log Wrap Up;

The final weekend, and the final video: Sleding Weekend Number 25 - The Final Weekend: Video Link

How do I wrap up the most detailed mileage log I’ve ever completed?

The amount of hours I put into this thread can’t even be calculated, and it was worth it. I’m happy to finally see it come to a close, a successful project at its completion almost a year later.

The biggest question I ask myself is, how have those Yamaha’s held up? More importantly, how have the 4 Stroke Engine’s held up?

Stats:

2007 Phazer Mountain Lite – 3 Seasons Old – 9,106 km’s or 5,691 Miles on the Odometer

The major failure complaint – a blown engine

2008 Nytro MTX – 2 Seasons Old – 8,798 km’s or 5,499 Miles on the Odometer

No major failures

Of coarse there’s been a host of issues from electronic reverse to track durability. If I spent a week reading everything I’ve written on the forums since 2003, I think the number of minor problems I’ve had with my Yamaha sleds amount to about the same as with the Ski-doo’s. Most recently over the summer I discovered that each PTO drive shaft bearing on both sleds with basically the same mileage is shot. I also found a broken bolt in the chaincase on the Nytro that holds the bottom gear in the driveshaft.

Have the 4 stroke engine’s been more durable? Yes. I say that with a slight lack of confidence only because I’d like to see 20,000 km’s on a motor before I truly answer this question. Also having the Phazer motor go down, fluke or not, is not a good grade for its durability. Compare that however to 4 or 5 engine’s on my 800 PowerTEK in 18,000 km’s or 11,250 Miles.

Throw all of that out the window and consider the service from the dealership and the support from the manufacturer and there is no comparison. Yamaha has stood behind the products I have owned far beyond any original expectations I had. My dealer did the same. That combination is unbeatable.

Am I now a dedicated Yamaha rider? No. I love trying everything out there. My mileage chart at the end of this post shows that. I wish I had an E-TEC that I could throw 10,000 km’s on and see how the motor holds up, but that’s not in the cards for now.

This December the Phazer is out of warranty. It will be the first sled I have ever purchased new and kept outside of its warranty period. If I have an engine failure again, that will strike the end of my confidence in that motor design. If it runs for another 10,000 km’s, I will be a happy camper and will agree that the first failure was a fluke.

I just completed all of my maintenance on the Phazer. It will be in for issues with the electronic reverse not engaging half the time and the excessive free-play in the steering. The bushings are being replaced much like BRP bushings in the Rev, and the PTO driveshaft bearing is shot. Outside of those issues the sled is in good shape and I didn’t find anything else wrong with it.

In the process of overhauling the Nytro I found the chaincase bolt issue and the same bearing shot. I purchased a new track (the exact same model that came with it and fell apart) but I shaved the lugs down from 2.25” to 1.5” using a cutting wheel on an angle grinder (thanks Nate!)

My sleds will finally get a chance to live the easy life for about a month when I trailer them to Ontario for riding in January. They’ll love not having to drown through crystallized powder, 10 minute ¾ throttle lake runs and –40 degree cold starts, not to mention towing for the Nytro.

These are some of the major differences between what these sleds are designed for vs. what I use them for. Life expectancy changes when this equipment is pushed to the limits. I have no doubt I’d have 50% less problems if I was riding the trails they were built for (even though these are ‘mountain’ sleds)

I owe a big thanks to my dealer Force One in Yellowknife as well as the warranty department at Yamaha Canada and I can’t forget Chris Reid for his blog and answering any questions I’ve had about my sleds. Thanks to YOU, the viewers for reading my reports and taking the time to watch the video’s, its been fun. I owe thanks to moderators and folks at both Dootalk.com and Ty4stroke.com for hosting my crazy adventures throughout the season and allowing fellow riders to keep coming back for more. Thanks to Tom at TY for the awesome Yamaha Storm Pack. Perfect timing as my Ski-doo Pack had just fallen apart this past spring! Now if only I could get my hands on some Klim/Yamaha riding gear, I’d be set! Thanks to http://www.cyclehippie.com/ for their service manual’s – check ‘em out, only $15 I think I paid for an emailed PDF!

As for the coming season, no new sled on tap – the Yamaha’s will continue the grind through northern terrain and I’ll be depending on them to do what they say they can, outlast the competition on the snow. We’ll see what the future holds.

My season wraps up with 7,924 KM'S (4,953 MI) on the books on a variety of sleds this past year. Thanks to Mama and Papa for the great trip in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, thanks to Nate, Ray and Brandon for the memories at Revy, thanks to Alex and Steve over at Glacier House for the awesome powder and hospitality, and thanks to my sisternlaw Mel for her trip North. I owe thanks to Blachford Lake Lodge and of coarse Don and Lucy at Hearne Lake Lodge for showing Melanie what northerners are all about!

While this mileage log took so many hours, I’m amazed I got as much riding in as I did. I’m leaning towards taking the next season off from this level of detail on the forums, but I just might not be able to stay away, we’ll see how it goes.

I wrap with a quick summary of my mileage chart over the years…

Here’s to a great upcoming winter!

YK
