Going to a backcountry 1.75" track on my XTX. What clutching/gearing should I do? I weigh 200lbs without gear and ride 70% off trail. I also go to the mountains (7000-10,000 ft.) 2-3 times a year.

I would suggest posting this over in the Mountain section also - I have seen a few posts over there doing what you want to do. Allen Ulmer and Tom Hartman are very good resources to contact also they can setup you up with drivers, clutching for the different riding condition and elevation. Clutching is very difficult as sleds dont always react the same to the same springs/weights. You will be shaving and swapping weights and springs even helix and whatever else on the quest for the ultimate ride. Its an art form but once you have it there is nothing better.

Call Ulmer Racing and talk to them, they will sell you the right setup, I had that track last year and I believe I went one tooth down and ran Ulmer's pre-set clutching, worked great but track was junk after 2500 miles....and I miss my studs.

Back in 08 when I 144'd my shorty and put the back country on I left the gearing alone even when I went to the mountains. Seemed to pull it just fine and had no belt issues. Wouldn't hurt to gear down one. As far as the track being junk, well One year with over a 1500 miles and another 1000 with the powderlites stage 2 and the track still looked good even after 2 years on Saskatchewan snirt.
Ulmers clutching DOES work!

I put a Backcountry on my Boosted sled last year and have about 2000 miles on it and it still looks almost new? I didn't change a thing as far as gearing, but then I have the MPI Stage 1 on it. I was very happy with it and think I will put a Backcountry on my new Apex this season.

Well, unfortunatliy mine is junk, I wasnt saying the "backcountry" is junk but I either got a bad one or its not suited for my style of riding. I ride in low, med, and hi snow conditions and the terrain may have taken its toll on my track. Going back to a shorter lug (1.375 Cobra) with studs, too much ice and tight trails where I ride for this setup.

Last year I took my XTX out west and rode between 10-11,000 ft.

Back Country
Extroverts
Curnves XS Skiis
Set clutch to what Yamaha recommended for that altitude.
I weigh 275

I was only getting 8100 rpms on a flat packed lake, definetly needed to change gearing and more than just changing clutch weights.

I still had a blast but was needing more rpm's. One day got pretty warm and I really had a tough time, even in semi flat terrain.

Thanks for all the replies!! I have the sled tore down. What a job trying to remove the tunnel protectors!! It seemed like just a few more bolts and the motor was out. I will be calling Mr. Ulmer soon to discuss my gearing/clutching needs.

I bought my track from Tracks Canada it was under $700 cdn. Cheapest price I could find

Well I finally got the heat exchanger protectors removed. Lots of meticulous grinding!

What is everyone doing with the welds from the protectors? Are you grinding them down or leaving them?

I drilled the rivits from the top, no grinding, they came out in one piece and could be re-used. Anyone need a set ??

I ended up grinding them down VERY carefully.

As a matter of fact, I got to do it twice!!! I put a rock through the heat exchanger early in the season and insurance replaced it. We were out making our own trails and getting lost in the woods when it happened. After we noticed the leak, we headed straight out. For the first time ever I made it out without 1 wrong turn. Rode the 10 miles by trail to get back and the temp light came on as I pulled up to the trailer!

Just put a Backcountry on my XTX a few weeks ago and noticed that the lug spacing is about 6 inches pretty much all the way around the track, but at one point the lugs are very close together - about 3 inches. Is this where the track is "joined"?? Just making sure it isn't a defect of some kind. Thanks-

I noticed the same thing when my dealer was putting a back country on one of their XTX's last spring, never heard if the track was defected?? Seems weird though to happen twice, maybe it's normal, but you'd think the track would be out of balance???
