You should be able to go into the diagnostic mode as there is a test that can be performed to see if its faulty. Also should be able to hook a multi-meter and measure the two wires (+ pink and - black/blue) and measure volts; 4.75-5.25V.

I recall reading about the differences between the exhaust/intake cams in this post. Something about the intake cam having/being a single ring and the exhaust cam having/being a double ring. Not sure if applicable or not but might be something similar to distinguish between the two.
