It is a bit of reading -- but worth it. ;)!
Valve job from Pioneer + other settings: Floats @ 50 PSI (A-arms "look" level); Limiter Straps 1 hole up (shorter); Springs (coil & torsion) where Bruce set it Pioneer, transfer - one...
I put a Seat Jack on my 08 RTX a few years ago -- hoping it would be good for the few times a year my wife would like to go out into the great white ... Well -- she is about 5' 4" & 120 lbs, and it is really not too comfortable for her --
but I suspect it would be perfect for an 8 year old...
When I described the "2-Mile" never groomed trail -- it is an ugle stretch. Likely sees a few hundred sleds a week, and with the two rain/melt cycles we had, the bumps are now solid ice. It is non-stopbumps -- 2 foot & bigger.
We got ~ 1 foot of Snow yesterday and I was in it as it fell...
Perhaps the idea of "Out-Sourcing" might make it into the yamaha engineering department --
and they will just put some other skid on the Apex.
Imagine a factory installed M-20, or ZX2.
Who would even notice the differece in cost?
(the difference between really expensive & stupid...
If that were possible, I would like to get in the line of RTX owners who want to do the same ;):D
Perhaps Yamaha has an employee that thinks the "Apex RTX" is in some way "good" instead of a manufactured defect that customers must fix.
Earlier today I said I have adapted my riding style...
Your settings sound simular to mine -- Differences: I weigh 165, revalve @ Pioneer, & I lack the lack the experience of comparing it to ... (much other than a 1973 moto-ski). Perhaps you need to turn in the main spring to account for your weight~?
The skid on mine is stiff, but much-much...
If your wife rides like a snow-cross wanna-be, then the RTX will make her happy -- or if she really enjoys lots of sharp jabs -- or if your trails are really well groomed when you go riding. A revalve made mine ride-able. If I keep my 08 RTX it will get a different skid.
thottle habits and use of the brake effect the performance of the warmer(s). Find a location where you can hold RPMs @ 5-6+K (non-stop) for 5 minutes (without touching the brake), and see if it just starts working again ...
Just a guess --- based on how mine acts
I have no way to know -- No experience with "M-10."
The re-valve helps allot, but when the track wears out, I plan to replace the skid. If it were today (ZX2, M10, M20? - not sure -- I do not have to choose yet). I would like both a longer track & better skid. THe rest of the APEX RTX is a...
The idea of burning lubricant in an engine on purpose is just flawed (IMHO). If only 2 strokes (& carburetors) had been available in '08, then I would not have bought a sled at all.
A sled with a proven 4-stroke fuel injected engine -- that is why I bought a Yamaha. Fixing bad suspension...
What is still difficult for me to wrap my head around is that someone at Yamaha choose to put a single stage shock in that skid. I recall the '08 ads for the RTX saying something like the suspension is setup to "pop" over bumps with "squirt of the trottle." My guess is that somewhere someone...
Yami, I am wondering how you put 3,800 miles on the stock setup? :o|
Much like "jgustman" I was ready to trade mine for a moto-ski after the first hundred miles. I bought mine new and was not happy. I still think someone at Yamaha should explain what they had in mind when putting a...
I was thinking of the same excell headers & those "Copper" donuts --- assuming by next fall someone will have price on them ...
I would expect some marketing genius would make a kit (than includes better clamps too). ;)!
Re: Limiter Strap

#1 - It has been in hole #4 (one hole open above bolt) for three years. Good pressure on skis, handles well. Read on the form to set it all the way up for fresh deep snow -- have not had a chance to test that yet.
#2 - Mine only became ride-able after...
Take a phazer strap, and cut it in half (the long way). Two years ago I got the "wrong" one at the dealer. I think it was for a phazer - it was the same length, thickness, and the holes were in the same locations -- however it was twice as wide with two sets of holes. I needed it & it was the...
Mine was $500+ new (& not for sale) --
The few times a year I use makes it worthwile.
It was well made.
Install was not exactly as described - but OK in the end.
Everything exhaust is original on mine -- I hope it holds together until the aftermarket products have all these details worked out. I expect to replace everything at once (donuts & y-pipes) & it would be good to do it just once -- sounds like copper & stainless --- next season.
