Did the 04 rx1's have the ring issue that caused the oil burning or was it just the 03's

My understanding is that in 04 the rings were updated and the oil burning was not as excessive as some of the 03's. In 05 the rings were updated again.

I was told by the dealer I got my sled from that most of the oil consumption comes from the oil breather. Later models have a better breather tube that doesn't allow as much oil into the airbox. He said how much oil you use will depend on how hard you ride. That higher the rpm the more oil you'll use.

My dealer said that the blowby tube in the air box would clog with ice causing oil consumption. What Yamaha did was to cut a slit in the tube to allow it to breath.

I think both your dealers are blowing smoke up your you know where. I have to top up my oil on my 03 around every 150 miles so that would be pukeing out alot of oil into the air box or engine compartment and there is only a slight hint of oil after a 3000 mile season. So I'm pretty sure it's burning it. It will be interesting to see if my sled burns as much this year. At the end of last season I did the ring free treatment in the gas and sea foam in my oil for the last 100 miles of the season, Then changed my oil.
The reason I asked the original question is because I have a line on an 04 with just over 3000 miles for a decent price and Iam wondering if I want to do it or just wait and get something newer in a couple years. But if there is even a slight chance that it will be an oil burner, I want nothing to do with it. I already have an oil burner!!

You might be right about the dealer being full of it, but every sled is also different. I don't ride mine too hard and it didn't use any oil last year. So how you ride might have something to do with how oil it will use. I might try the seafoam in the oil at the end of this season. From what I've heard from others on here is that it does a good job of cleaning the engine.

My friend and I ride the same style. His burns oil, mine doesn't. His tail pipe covers are black with oil soot. Mine aren't. The dealers are blowing the same smoke. The oil is being burned.

I cut my breather tube on my 03, made no difference. I have a bad one a qt every 150 or so, just like a 2 stroke, but my oil is cheaper. I have heard that the 04 fixed the problem. Yamaha should have recalled the issue.

My 04 takes some and my friend's 03 takes A LOT....literally spits raw oil out the back on a cold start up. But to my knowledge the ring change did not come out untill 05 so I'm not sure why the 04 was better than the 03. I think there is some truth about oil coming out of the breather. I run the K&N filter pods with the intake horns and the clutch side horn (between the filter and carb) is always wet with oil and this is where the breather element for the crankcase comes out.
In my 700 miles of riding this year I have added close to a quart....so a quart every 1000 miles is not too bad. Although my other friend's Apex does not leave the full mark all season....that would be nice! Last time I was at the local warming hut, some guy was talking about his RX saying every time he went out, he had to fill up the oil and coolant....did it for years with no problems. It's not a big deal but more annoying than anything. Remember, this was Yamaha's first kick at the can for the four stroke so they are not perfect.

I'm wondering if the break in instructions changed in '05. At least in '04, the break in was to let it idle for a LONG time. Almost any engine builder will tell you that is about the worst thing you can do for an engine during break in, and almost certainly guarantees you will have an oil burner.[/QUOTE]
