05 Clutching RX-1 Mountain

Just thought I'd let you guys know, Supposedly the 05 RX-1 has 8BU-10 weights, Pink primary spring and a Pink secondary. Right now I have 8BU-00 Pink/Pink/Pink short primary wonder what that Pink secondary is? I'll have to check the chart and see whats diffrent in the 8BU-00 and the 8BU-10. Looks like their slowly figuring it out. Going to really help the guys that don't do any clutching. I wish they would read the posts on this site and take some of the good real world results and put them in production models. If they only took one good idea from each guy on this site they would have one hell of a sled and its FREE R&D

The 8BU-10 weighs 45.41 grams which is about 24grams less weight per finger than the 03 was using. It is no wonder that owners were discouraged by the performance. I guess the motor isn't the beast that Yamaha thought it was. Meanwhile I have been using 8EK-00 which weigh 39 grams and a white/gold/white short spring with 15KG preload and 2.25KG/MM spring rate. This set up allows for a very early clutch engagement speed to offset the engine gear reduction, and engine revs to 10,400RPM . Better fuel economy, less revy just riding around,less engine reving should translate into longer engine life, and full engine power going uphill in fresh snow. I think that the 05 clutching is a major improvement if the are using 8BU's but I believe my set up is best of all.

Hey Guys,

I've been running this setup for a couple of weeks now.

Primary 89A-10's P/S/P Spring 3 shims and 14.5 mm rollers
Secondary Silver 6-2 Twist , 54/42 daltonhelix

Had the 17mm with hole weights in the tip and only saw 10,000
all the way up and leveled off so i removed them now its 10,300
all the way perfect. Fuel economy is back to normal ..

Hey Snowfever et al- my dealer sez I can't run the pink-pink-pink (short) spring in the stock clutch. He sez I need a spacer- What gives? Any help would be appreciated

Hyerup, Their FULL of $hit. I would be concerned in their mechanical ability if that were my dealer. We have a few RX-1s here running that spring with and without a Turbo (Different weights in the non Turbos) When I hear stuff like that I love to prove them wrong. Ask them why? If they say it's too short tell them stop qoating from the manual and they will greatly improve the sleds they work on. As far as putting a shim in YES you can put several shims before you will get spring bind with this spring, but that will change the engaement (make it higher) and it affects the spring through its entire shift curve some what. My clutch squezes the belt at 2800rpm or so and makes the sled move at 3000rpm with this spring and thats with NO shims. It may not be the set up your looking for depending on what you like to do but it's perfect for me. My sled has no Turbo lag and is very forgiving when picking your way through the trees.

Hey Guys,

Just some minor changes.

Primary 89A-10's P/S/P no shims and 14.5 mm rollers
17.5mm with hole back in tip

Secondary Silver with 6-2 Twist

Stock helix (had the Dalton 52/42 progressive before)

Now i have good top end speed about 165 klm in 1/2klm
and rev's 10,700 back down to 10,200 everytime

All stock settings on carb with complete ECP kit.

Listen to Snow Fever, even something as small and cheap as a primary spring can have a huge change in machines operation. Sometimes bigger is not always better. Lets have a big round of applause for the little spring!! And like Snow Fever there is a person on this post who has laughed at my clutching to my face. But this person then raced my machine in front of a large group of people and lost. I had the last laugh.

I'm finally ready to improve my cluthing, but with the cost of clutch parts I'd rather not create an inventory of springs, weights and rollers to fine tune the thing. That's why I'd rather just copy the 05Mtn setup. The original posting on this subject stated "Supposedly the 05 RX-1 has 8BU-10 weights, Pink primary spring and a Pink secondary." Now that 05 mountains are arriving, is that how they are set up? What do they do for 3000 to 6000 elevation? Mountain Performance has "short" pink primary springs. Is that what is used? Can I keep my original rollers. My sled seems to climb great with my little 135lb body and 80 lbs off the sled. It just sounds like there's improvement to be had.
