I just blew up my sled today. not something I thought I would say with the 4 stroke. I have a 06 Vector w/ just over 4000 miles on it. It has plenty of oil, and anti freeze, but no compression in any cylinder. thinking maybe valve train? anyone else have this problem? Heard of this problem? Any other ideas then the valve train? Thanks for your time.

Go to your dealer, you might be very pleased with the way it is handled

Need further info to be sure this is actually a blown motor. I'd first suspect that a simple broken camshaft chain could cause a no compression situation on all cylinders assuming a valve was left in an open position on each one after it broke. Broken cam sprocket or camshaft itself are other alternatives. There's no possible way you have holes in all 3 pistons so I'm much less likely to suspect something down low.
I suppose it could also be a broken crankshaft, or a HUGELY broken head or block, all of which would obviously be much worse. But these scenarios are much less likely I would think.
When you checked compression that tells me the engine is still spinning, which is good. Were all the pistons actually moving up and down? If yes, then you're definitely looking in the right direction at a valvetrain issue....and I'd strongly suspect a broken chain before anything else.
I'm assuming you're not planning to fix this yourself, so really no great benefit in taking it any further on your diagnostic...just take it in. But if you're planning to possibly address these repairs on your own, we'll need more info to help you determine the problem. Wish you the best.
For an 06, whether out of warranty or not, I'd strongly consider taking it in to ask (nicely) for some help from your dealer.

Thanks for the advice. the pistons were moving up and down. (you can hear them.) I have every intention of talking it to the Dealer. I was venting last night as the dealer was closed. I was also looking to see if anyone else had, had this problem or heard of it so I have some sort of history before I go to my dealer.
My husband is a great mechanic and could fix it himself but we don't want to do anything until we hear what Yamaha has to say. MY 1 year warranty was up 1/7/2006, the reason I bought a 4 stroke was so I wouldn't need an extended warranty.

wow the 3 cylinders are bullet proof too.I think it's best all around engine and most reliable yamaha ever made for snowmobiles.

Update.....
The best we can tell the sprocket at the end of the crankshaft is completely striped. ( the one the timing chain rides on) Anyway lots o damage, lots of parts need to be replaced. My warranty was up 1/7/07. At this point Yamaha has agreed to pay to have the machine totally taken apart to access the whole problem, then we will take it from there. Our dealer has been awesome and is going to bat for us. It is a fluke problem. Anyway thought I would let you know what was going on.

That's awesome yamaha did that they could have told you to get bent.I have heard that on some rx1's too there warranty was up and yamha still covered that.I know for a fact none of the other manufacture would do that.

That would be the FIRST Vector motor to have this happen because I know Yamaha Canada has advertised that there has never been a warranty claim on ANY VECTOR MOTOR SINCE IT CAME OUT....

Yamaha is very very good about motor problems that is one area they really shine. If it is determined that it was a defect more than likely it will be taken care of, On the rare occasion that one goes down they come out of the woodwork to find out why. Hope everything works out for you.

06 Vector noise
My Vector makes a noise that sounds like pinging or a bad gear noise.
Don't like the sound, its not right, but dealer couldn't find anything wrong.
Did you have any indication of the problem???
My buddy's Vector sounds worse than mine.
I don't want to get caught out on the trail as I travel by myself alot.

Bought a new 06 off the showroom floor last month. Broke it in by the book, allowed it to warm up etc... Went to Michigan, came back with 390 miles on it. Puddle of oil on the trailer floor. Oil level low. Took it to dealer. Yamaha techs kept telling dealer too much oil in sled. They emptied it several times to appease techs, oil still flowing into airbox and out of engine. Airbox replaced with one out of another sled. Still no good. Yamaha techs say they have never seen this before, ever. Looks to be oil pump. This problem did not seem to happen till the end of my trip, but engine now has some time running with oil in wrong places etc... They are looking at replacing the oil pump.
I am dead set on new motor. Who knows what damage is done and on top of that I bought a new sled, jumped the Cat ship to Yamaha. Always heard good things about Yammy and now I sit without a sled and definitly without confidence. I will let you folks know if Yammy is able to satisfy me. So, yes there are problem Vectors out there. I'm sure very few, but I just had to be one that got stung.
