Guys,
Got my Ohlins shock back from Pioneer, now putting the skid back under my daughters Attak GT. Electronic shock adjustment isn't working. I need help figuring out why. Here's what I know so far:
1. Fuse is good (10 amp fuse)
2. Mode switches to shock adjustment mode ok. When I click up or down the gauge indicates up/down but the shock does nothing.
3. Checked the voltage at the shock plugin while using the mode & adjustment switch- no voltage (not sure how much it's suppose to be)
4. Continuity check the white wire on the sled side - good to the front side of the fuse holder.
5. Continuity checked the grey (ground) to engine - has continuity. To me that means wires aren't broke.
6. I have the plug off the sled side - if I plug EITHER wire into the correct plug of the Ohlins side, I can set the mode switch (which again makes me think wires aren't broke)
What should I check next? How much voltage should I expect to be seeing?
Thanks!
Bob

If I understand you correctly you are saying that with the shock unplugged that you can not get the shock icon to appear on the display (which is normal). When you connect the shock to the wiring harness then you can select the shock adjust mode and the shock icon appears on the display (this is also normal). When you push the up and down switch on the handlebar the shock adjustment bar graph on the display goes up and down (this is also normal). This tells me that your wires are not broken and your fuse is not blown which you have already concluded on your own.
So my question is how are you determining that "the shock does nothing"? What exactly are you expecting to see as an indication that the solenoid inside of the shock is functioning properly? On my '07 Apex GT I never noticed any difference when the sled was sitting still and I actually never noticed very much of a difference when I made adjustments while riding down the trail. Please elaborate as to how you are determining that the "shock does nothing"?

Correct. I've never had a GT so I'm not certain what is suppose to happen but I expected to hear/feel some engagement (clicking or hum) from the solenoid. I had my hand on it & ear close while my wife adjusted it.
Then I put my voltmeter on it & detected no voltage (granted it is an analog meter so if it were very small voltage I wouldn't see it). The no voltage is what concerns me most.

My shock never made any noise whatsoever when I would adjust it in a quiet garage with my ear close to it. I think that the solenoid is simply moving some sort of a metering valve that changes the internal oil flow which in theory should change the dampening . On a rough trail I could detect a slight difference between the two extremes of the available adjustment. IMO this system was simply a marketing gimmick. If it worked so great why did they go away from it in later models? I simply set mine to the middle of the adjustment and never touched it again. As Ron Popeil would famously say....."set it and forget it." LOL!

My shock is at Pioneer right now. How long did the shock service take if I may ask?
I'd be doing the same thing (checking for noise) after I plugged it back in.

I had it serviced back in October/early November. As I recall the total turn-around time was about 2 weeks (maybe a little more). Unfortunately I didn't get around to putting it back together until now - crunch time .My shock is at Pioneer right now. How long did the shock service take if I may ask?

If it was not working you would get no shock icon on the screen

Thor - that seems to make sense to me, but still, if there isn't any voltage going to the shock I don't see how it would work.

yeah i dont know but if its working right you will notice a diffrence while ridding.

my experience with the adjustment is quite different than mentioned above. I noticed quite large changes in shock performance from full soft to full hard while driving down a trail.....I have never been able to detect a noise or clicking when adjusting but I can tell the difference. Not sure if it matters or not on the solenoid performance but I did have mine re-valved by Shock Tec. (awesome by the way)

Like I said earlier, I never noticed that huge of a difference in the EC adjustment. However it was somewhat noticeable especially on rough trails. The difference however was not worth the trouble of making adjustments IMO so I just left mine in the middle of the adjustment range.
I agree with Thor that if the shock icon is present that the system should be working. If the solenoid coil or the wiring had an open circuit, or if the fuse was blown, then the EC adjustment mode could not be selected and the shock icon would not be displayed.
Bob, I understand that you checked continuity but couldn't detect voltage. I am not sure myself what the voltage should be. Perhaps you need to open the circuit and put a DC miliamp meter in series in the solenoid coil to see if it draws any current when it is adjusted. Perhaps the system can only can make adjustments with the engine running?
I guess that I have to ask you if you noticed a difference in the EC adjustment while riding the sled before getting the shock serviced. If so, then I would expect that you should know if it is still working as soon as you ride the sled again.
If you notice a difference in the adjustment while riding then I suppose that it is a moot point as to how to measure or test the system in the shop. However if you are an inherently curious person like me then I understand that perhaps you just want to learn and understand how it works.

It sounds like everything is normal: You won't really hear anything (BTDT - I get curious too). I also believe Bruce would've told you if there was a problem with the shock. It does sound, to me anyway, like you might be over-thinking your task a tad bit.

What if the shock icon does not show up on the selections when using the Mode switch?
I just sold my 2007 Attak GT today. The rear Ohlins was bought new leftover from a dealer last year. It only has 500 miles on it. The wire harness to it is also brand new, no blown fuses either.....?? Any thoughts?

OK, the new owner called me back.Up front before the sale I was honest with him and said it had a rub through on the shock wire harness and it needed replacing before I sold it. I picked it up this week from our dealer and installed it a couple nights ago. The old harness had a slight rub through close to the shock end connector. I gave him the old harness and my original Ohlins shock which has 15,000 + miles on it hence a few rebuilds.
He repaired the rub through on the old harness and connected that from the machine to the old shock. The dash icon came up and it worked. He then hooked old cable to new shock on machine....worked again. Then tried new cable one last time on both shocks....nothing. I got a bad cable...brand new in the package. Unreal!! Maybe Cat is making those now!!
The dealer said he'll replace it but that's crazy!!
