Hello,

I am new to the 4 stroke sleds. I recently bought an 03 RX 1 and love the machine. I had a question about the longevity of these four stroke engines. From what I read these engines don't even break in until about 3000 to 4000 miles. I was wondering from a used standpoint, what would be considered high mileage on these engines? What type of maintenance would be expected on a higher mileage engine? Thanks for any input.

They don't reccomend any major service till over the 20 k mark but parts failures can occur. I threw a rod at 5500 miles on my 03 we have not torn down the old motor yet but suspect an oil pump problem.

I followed the reccomended breakin to a tee, I changed oil and filters every start to a season. My sled never burnt a drop of oil but just like any hand grenade sitting on the shelf - running wide open at 10,200 rpms let go - lots of mess.

Thanks for the input. It sounds like these engines will keep me on the trails for many years to come. Hats off to 4 stroke technology. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!!

These motors are bullit proof both the sled and bike engines,if you maintain it with oil&filter changes on a schedualed basis you will be fine. For anybody hurting/blowing motors they should find another occupation cause a engine builder/mechanic they are not. Just my .02

They are as a whole bullitproof but with no motor mods to mine and clutched at 10,300 she still went boom. after which I found through trying to find another motor that there is a lot of them out there just not in the percentages that you see in other manufacturers. I know dealers that never had seen a blown triple 700 other than ring failures or burnt piston. These have a tendency to take themselves out.

I have talked to more than 10 people this summer with 03's that threw a rod wiping out the crank, block & head. 10 is a small number compared to the people with say Polaris 900's that have paper weights.

I still would not trade it for even another Yami 2 stroke - I have 2 and have not had them on snow in 2 seasons.

Mine blew up too. I would have to say after blowing up my GSXR 750 that these 4 stroke performance motors are the toughest thing out there but bullet proof they are not. Good maintenance and treating it right I would expect (just a guess) to get about 35000-40000 miles out of one. Remember with the clutching on these they turn over 7000 there whole life a motorcycle with a similar engine may be run hard but never spends the amount of time our machines do at or near redline. just for some examples Yamaha FZ600 28,000 miles sold still running well smoked a tiny bit drag raced once in a while. GSXR 750 drag raced every weekend rode hard pu t away wet whole weekends doing wheelies and burnouts blew up at 18,000 used motor from an 86 put in sold running strong and faster at the drags with 40,000 and my GSXR1100 drag raced almost every weekend lots of wheelies learned tires where to expensive so not so many burnouts but rode pretty hard 62,000 on the ticker sold still running great. 2000 Hayabusa only dragged a couple 10 times for fun still does incredible wheelies to about 130 MPH I ride more in the mountains ond corners now but she has about 34,000 on it trouble free miles.
