My Rage got 15-17 during break in and after about 2000 miles started getting 18-20. Now with 11,000 miles it gets 18-20 all the time depending on conditions.
An air leak at the air box can really screw up the fuel mixture on these engines as the intake tract is tuned extremely well. It can also cause a loos of power making the rider apply more throttle causing a drop in mileage.
Groomer Driver... I know you have the M-10 in yours so right off you are going to loose 1-2 mpg but you should still be in the 16-18 range.
ALSO If you are idling around 2300 you are close to engagement on the clutch and this can be causing the belt to drag using more fuel just idling.

Your right.....I can pretty much bank on 16-17.

Ok, I pulled the belt and checked the drag on the track and I can turn it with 2 fingers. I also checked the choke and its coming all the way off. As far as I can tell the air box is all the way on, but Groomdriver mentioned that its a pain to get on and both times I put it on, it slid on real easy. So maybe i will look at that again. After that I guess I will have take it to the dealer.
Thanks guys

Could the carb synch somehow have gotten thrown wayyy off?
Let us know what the dealer says, and good luck!

I guess it's possible for sure, but the question is could it reduce my gas mileage that much? I did say it runs great and pulls well, but I have no baseline to go by as I just got the sled this year and it is my 1st 4stroke.
I would remove all 3 plugs to find a possible pig rich cylinder. From the theory that Carbs does not all get all messed up at once... then one does it all. Read the plugs. If a float circuit got disajusted by mistake during clean-up or that the valve is stuck open, it will do just that. If your stuck closed..... then it will do just that but worst.. with bad low idling.. your not running on 2 aren't you ? again read the plug you'd see that too.

As I said this is my first 4 stroke, so here is a stupid question. Are the spark plugs under the ignition coils, and if so how do you get at them?

It's really pretty simple to change plugs on these. Simply unplug the wires at each coil pack, pull out the coils and the plugs are down in there. The plug wrench that Yamaha supplies works really well for getting to them. Check the plugs, who knows. By the way, we've always gotten between 18 & 22 mpg since new, so you definately have something going on here.fasteddie said:As I said this is my first 4 stroke, so here is a stupid question. i would guess the carbs are way off as you should be getting way more then that for milage for sure. i think your plugs would be carboned up hard from all the wasted gas going thru and surprised it runs that good and not a pig from being way too rich.

Find anything out on your sled yet fasteddie? The worst milage I have gotten is 17 mpg during break-in and I've gotten right around 20 mpg consistently since. (+/- 2 mpg depending on type of riding that day) I agree on track tension...run it loose.

I haven't found out anything yet, but I'm going to try loosening the track until it ratchets and tighten it up a little from there. Also going to pull the plugs and inspect as someone here suggested. It makes sense that if its carbs, it should show up on the plugs?
Turk mentioned that the sliders could be sticking, and after thinking about it I remembered that sometimes when I start slowly from a dead stop, the sled surges for about 10-15 ft. It feels kind of like trying to drive a standard transmission car in high gear at slow speed. So I will be looking at the sliders as well, but not sure what to look for other than the wear limit?

Check your clutches also, after what you said about "feels like starting in high gear", my wifes sled was doing this, so I took apart the secondary clutch and cleaned and lubed it. I took it for a ride after that and it seemed to have solved the problem. If the secondary is not closing up all the way, the belt will be riding a touch low, which would give you the feeling that you're in the "wrong gear" so to speak.fasteddie said:twomorestrokes said:Find anything out on your sled yet fasteddie?
