2003 Yamaha RX-1
I just bought a 2003 rx1. The guy I bought it from said he had the carbs cleaned because it wasn't running well. I still notice a sputting between 4000=-5000rpm. It seems to occur after warm up like after 10-15miles of riding. Any thought?

:carbs:some times it takes multiple times before all the crud is out.

My carbs were perfect still spuddered mid range ended up buying carb sync tool and had couple of carbs were way off once got all 4 synced together spudder was gone

The carbs are really finicky takes a bit of tinkering to tune them. Once you think you have them perfect something else will get you!

Other thing to check is the coils. I clean mine yearly on my RX! They get dirty (I use electrical cleaner and a Q tip to clean mine) and need to be cleaned also check if they fit tight on the sparkplugs there are clips inside that need to be seated properly and need to be there. Plus when was the last time it got new plugs? The plug top threads wear.

Very true. I had been battling with mine all season and finally after taking them on and off about 5 times I got it running well. My next sled will definantly be EFI!

Thanks you guys, great suggestions...I will clean again and synch em.

Is there a way to make the coils fit tight if they are loose ? I have one that doesn't "snap" on like the other three. I've thought about pinching it with some pliers, but I was afraid I would just damage the coil. The old Warrior still runs good, but I did notice one coil was loose compared to the others.

Can't pinch it, you can buy a used 05 coil from Laneo or other part suppliers on TY. Do you still have the clip inside the coil? There is a metal ring ie clip inside the coil where the sparkplug threads on top of the plug slide into and make a connection with the coil. If they are missing you not getting a connection and the spark is arcing inside the coil loosing power to make the spark jump to the plug before it can even jump the gap on the other end inside the motor. One guy on here soldered the tip of the plug to thicken it and then filed it down till tight, not sure how well that would work because if its not making direct contact with the coil via the clip its still having to bride a gap and that looses spark energy.

Have you ever run the sled in the dark with the hood open to see how much arcing is happening between the coils and the valve cover? Mine had quite a light show till I cleaned the all the coils. If the spark can't make a good contact with the plug it will find another path to ground. Best replacement coils are the 05 coils!

just stay committed to it... when I got my rx-1 it hadn't run for a couple of years (even after a $2000 bill from an unnamed Yamaha dealer to the original owner) but after a full rebuild of the carbs and starter clutch it now runs quite well. Now I just need a turbo for it so I can get back to tinkering lol.

Also to sasquatch: Would you recommend di-electric grease in the coils after cleaning?

Thanx for the advice Sasquatch. I'll have to check and see if the metal clip is still in there. I have never looked under the hood to see if there is arching going on. The sled seems to run really good so I never thought to check the coils until I changed the spark plugs and I noticed one of them was loose. I'll have to run it at night and check for a light show under the hood. LOL

Well I opened my hood up last night with the sled while it was running and amazingly there wasn't any arching. I can't seem to get a light just right to see down the coil, but I imagine the metal clip your talking about is missing since its so much looser than the other three. It'll just slide off without any resistance. I see some aftermarket coils like SPI for around $50. Has anyone tried these to know if their any good or should I just get a good used OEM one ?

Can't say what they are like but the clip is visible if you take the boot off. Spray a little electrical cleaner inside the coil the clip shines. When you put the coil on you can hear feel the clip clicking over the threads on the plug.

Yeah that clip must've been missing because there was no clicking as it slid over the threads on the plug. I did order an aftermarket coil from rmstatorinc right here in Vt. It only took 2 days for it to arrive. I installed it tonight, it fit nice over the plug and the sled ran good. I wont really know how it'll work till I get it out on the trail this weekend. It was about $70 for a new one. If it doesn't work out I'm going to stick with the Yamaha coils. I figured it was worth a try. That's not a bad price for a new one.
