Have had the sled since new in 2006. Just started last season having a hard time keeping it running when started cold. You have to keep feathering the throttle until warmed up and moving. After moving for a short while, it will run fine the rest of the ride. It's almost like it doesn't want to idle right when cold but then again it runs fine after warmed up.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Pilot jet(s) clogged. Common problem.

Buy new ones or clean with carb cleaner and compressed air. If you've never cleaned the carbs since new I'm surprised it lasted this long.

If that was the case, wouldn't it continue to run rough? It does clear up relatively soon after warmed up.

I will clean the pilots regardless.

Would there be any need to adjust the fuel screw setting? Really don't want to mess with it if its not necessary.

Thanks,

Has the temp light gone out and it's still struggling to run? Or only during the choke process?

It acts the same during both during and after the choke process. Clears up after running for awhile.

My 05 was acting pretty much the same. Pulled the carb's and had them disassembled and professionally sonic cleaned. Installed new pilot jets, pulled the caps off of the fuel/air (don't recall what they do) and set them to 2 turns (don't remember the exact spec) out and put the carbs back on. Synched them and the sled ran like new again. The screws are capped at the factory after the carbs are adjusted to the leanest possible condition.

I'll start by pulling carbs and looking at jets before getting any deeper and causing more problems than it is. Thanks for responding.

If that's all your going to do at least CHANGE the pilots.....they are cheap. Looking at them aint gonna tell you sheet.

This is a post from Northernsledder on another thread. you could try filling the float bowl with MIB mechanic in a bottle . you can get it at Home Depot for $ 5.00 for a 4 oz bottle, fill the float bowls and leave kill switch off and crank to fill the carbs then let it soak over night . Then try and start , it might run a little rough until the MIB gets out of the carbs but it does a good job. It's worth a try if your not comfortable tearing down your carbs .

Going to try to get at it this weekend working all week
Mike, the carb sleds will lose prime from fuel evaporation after a few weeks of sitting, especially this time of year; I'm guessing this is one of your problems. Remove one fuel line from the fuel pumps, insert a small funnel. Pour fuel in the funnel and wait for it to go down. Keep doing this until it stops taking fuel; it will fill all three carbs, as they're all inter-connected at the float bowls. Some guys even clamp the gas tank vent shut and blow compressed air into the gas tank to prime. Fuel pumps are on the left side of the sled under the key switch panel and headlight pod.

Your no crank problem is probably related to cranking and cranking from trying to start the sled with all the fuel evaporated out of the carbs. You could have either burned up the starter or blew a fuse; hopefully the later. It could be a ground block or the starter solenoid cable next to the battery as well. Your battery could be shot from the frequent starting and no charging too!

My suggestion is sit down and read your owners manual front to back. Take all the panels off the sled and become familiar with how it's put together. The only way to learn about your ride is to work on it.

Of course, asking on this site is a good start as well! ;)!

It may be as simple as syncing the carbs which many people neglect doing as periodic maintenance. If there's a running issue that doesn't clear up after a few tanks of gas I'd do a simple carb cleaning followed by syncing the carbs. If the carbs are out of sync it usually shows up at idle.

Here's a simple carb sync tool and procedure: http://www.ty4stroke.com/threads/carb-sync-tool.108472/

Most definitely. Syncing your carbs is by far one of the most overlooked parts of maintenance. My 07 had exactly the same symptoms- it would start, but not like it should. Clean them up first and then sync. You will be blown away how amazing she will run.

When the carbs need syncing the clutch rattle at idle also tends to be worse.

This too!!! ^^^^^
