2017 Sidewinder, new to me. Hard starting, 1st video is the first attempt
2nd video is the second attempt
As seen in the 2nd video, turning over then stops turning over 2-3 times while I’m holding the key to crank. Prior owner said it has a new
battery, doesn’t appeared to be new, I’m thinking the battery is going and doesn’t have enough CCA due to age and beginning to fail.
Prior owner was thinking it needed the valve clearance adjusted (11,500 miles)
What is your opinion? or what do I need to check, change or correct. Sled runs great once it starts.
Appreciate your feedback

May need the valves adjusted AND a better battery. What's the voltage of the battery?

So your right on what the prior owner was saying, Guy I bought from was saying the valves will need to be adjusted, hoping to ride still and adj valves when season is done.May need the valves adjusted AND a better battery. What's the voltage of the battery?
Im thinking battery is fading so I’m picking up new one today. Thanks a lot for your input,

Check the belt height at the secondary also. I notice it tugging at the belt when you're cranking it over.
I'm almost at the same milage on mine, and it starts like it did when new.
Also, do you know if the stator with pickup coil has been replaced?

I also noticed the engines is 'snatching back" a little makes we wonder about an aftermarket stator or a stator issue. Starting issue like that is definitely not typical on the 998Also, do you know if the stator with pickup coil has been replaced?

It seems like kickback. I've seen that multiple times with an aftermarket pickup coil. Often the machine will run fine once running. The solution is to switch the pickup coil wires at the plug.I also noticed the engines is 'snatching back" a little makes we wonder about an aftermarket stator or a stator issue. Great info...confirm you are just reversing the two wires at the pickup connection? It seems like kickback. I've seen that multiple times with an aftermarket pickup coil. Often the machine will run fine once running. The solution is to switch the pickup coil wires at the plug.

Right, it's easier than taking everything apart and/or cutting and soldering wires.Great info...confirm you are just reversing the two wires at the pickup connection?
Seems sometimes these are polarity sensitive.

You might be on to something, he said he put in a aftermarket stator, where is the best place to get an oem stator?I also noticed the engines is 'snatching back" a little makes we wonder about an aftermarket stator or a stator issue. Starting issue like that is definitely not typical on the 998

Sounds like I need to do this, I think he did change the pu coil.It seems like kickback. I've seen that multiple times with an aftermarket pickup coil. Often the machine will run fine once running. The solution is to switch the pickup coil wires at the plug.

Update, started hard, once warm it stalled. Went to restart and it was making a grinding noise. Removed starter and it was locked up and the o-ring nose on starter had broken off Removed stator cover and found the idler gear had some teeth ground off. Have a new idler gear and starter on order. Hopefully I was able to find all the metal from the teeth on the gear being ground by starter. I’m hoping the hard starting issue was caused by the starter failing. Time will tell. Any thing I should be doing when installing the new parts?
Thanks

I also found the rear tube/hose that attaches to the back side of the turbo was loose, tightened it and was wondering if this was the cause of the hard starting issues or was causing a lower then normal idle rpm’s

Do you mean the crossover tube from air box? Or, do you mean the oil drain hose? Or, do you mean coolant exit hose? In any case. Imo none of them would cause hard starting.
Was this engine EVER turned backward (clockwise as viewed from clutch side)?
If it has fuel (~ 43 psi fp) and air, and ignition (good spark plugs!) it shouldn't start hard.
What is compression?
