2019 SRX/Sidewinder Leaking Oil

Have a new Turbo SRX/Sidewinder that is leaking oil, at the dealer for the 3rd time (Yamaha Rep coming to look at it tomorrow).

Question I have is first thing dealer did (which is what I would have done I suppose) is check the seal from the oil tank to chaincase housing. They've now fixed it twice (and even replaced the entire oil tank last time) and its still leaking - quite a lot. Apparently they way the oil is leaking is too hard to pinpoint the location from where its originating?

Has anyone else run into this issue? What was the resolution?

on my 17' I found there was some seepage at the lower elbow and maybe on portions of the seal...I used heat first and gently tightened fasteners and it went away...

Beware, those fasteners (cheap screws, not bolts) strip easily and do not hold. I have already tapped 2 and replaced with bolts.

yes sir...I would not reef...it was a heat first and just a gentle additional hand tightening that did it for me...as you basically said...magnesium is soft...so beware..

The dealer mentioned they were using a sealant that had to cure for 24 hours - guess I didn't see any sealant (like RTV) mentioned on any microfiche? Think they are doing that just because they suspect the magnesium case and gaskets are bad often??

If they are using permatex it needs to cure 24 hours. We have had the oil tanks leak on 5 out of 5 sleds now in our group. Many threads on this if you do a search.

The prescribed way is yamabond... Others here have used rtv gasket maker?

Hence the ROV delete.....

Although I removed my ROV from get go, and then my oil tank seeped about 2 months later, I just think the design sucks.....will see how long my re-seal holds up. Some guys say its stays sealed great once done by yourself, others say it comes back eventually. Maybe for '20 Cat/Yam will have some new engineering(almost made myself believe this!) LOL

I forget the company but a guy on the FB page mentioned he made oil tanks for the Nytro's and he's making one for the Winder where it bolts in same place but its a self contained tank, which makes a heck of a lot of sense.

Spray nine turns Mobile 1 purple. Great for seeing engine oil leaks everywhere

Check the top of your oil tank to make sure the casting was knocked out with a vent hole. Mine wasn’t and had a slow oil leak. The round part on top that has 4 bolts holding it on. It’s under there. Could probably pull the ROV hose off the top of it and check with a flash light
