Speaking of sled rags, does anyone get the sense that some of them are shamelessly paid advertisements written up as "articles?"

Veering even further off topic, one of said sled magazines was creaming themselves and fawning over the Polaris 850. But..........I'm reading and hearing that there are catastrophic flaws (typical of Polaris engineering and manufacturing processes) in a high percentage of the 850 sleds, warranties, recalls, you name it. It amazes me that Polaris can get away with this tinfoil and hot glue garbage. Sorry for the digression. End rant.

Twins where cheaper to build and warranty. They where also lighter and narrower ( albeit harder on belts) so they took over the steep and deep. We go in circles Lake racer get, then mountain climbers get, right now the push is on mountain climbers. Yamaha went to four strokes for emissions, and reliability was later proven but an unknown in 2003. If hp is king then why is the 998 turbo not the preferred mountain sled? Why is it not the top sled sled beating out sales of all brands in all other classes? Torque is the only value produced by a Dyno, hp is a mathematical figure produced by calculating torque and rpm to give you hp numbers. So torque is important at different rpms based on the use and design of the engine.
I can tell you right now that HP is not king in the mountains. Does HP help? Yes it does but more people care about how their sled is set up and how light they can make them. You can take a 600 mountain sled any place an 800 will go as long as its set up right.

Absolutely, they have been pumping up sleds like that for years. Haven’t read that garbage in many moons.

The disadvantage of a triple two stroke compared to a twin two stroke is that, considering they are both single piped, the twin will make way more horsepower.
The single pipe just doesn't work properly on a triple.

Yamaha made it work the best though with the 700 SX Viper with the staggered compression and the ignition. That allowed the odd exhaust wave to come into the single pipe at a different frequency.

What if the 800 is set up right?

You haven’t ridden the mountain sled Yamaha should have made, here it is! Trust me no 600 will even come close. SRX pipes 780 BB

Then it will go further but most people don't know how to set up a sled to its full potential. They just sled them set up from the factory. In the mountains set up is very important and knowing how to adjust it depending on snow changes is key.

What type of seat is on this sled
Home made with ridged insulation and foam.
I flipped the taillight upside down.
162 cat skid, coolant runs through two Polaris exchangers and the rear bumper.

Anybody know the weights of say an Arctic Cat 700 twin vs a Yamaha 700 triple, I doubt is very much.

Take a 700 triple and knock off one cylinder part of the crank one rod and piston. Id say 8 to 10pds. All I know is an Apex engine is 8 pds heavier then a Viper engine and that was thought to be too heavy. Now on to the weight of the triple pipes and added body to hold them. Twin can get away with a single pipe exhaust better then a triple. So we will talk the 700 triple, in the SRX it made 135 hp but the SX made 120. The 600 twin makes 120, you need the pipes.

On top of that it is much wider so front frame has to be wider or mount the motor higher. The frames the 700 triple sat in are not today's frames. So drop in a single pipe 700 makes same as 600 twin, mount it higher in the frame and add ten pds. Or 800 triple with triple pipes about 150 and again heavier and wider and still 15hp short so 900 triple triple might do it to, get to the 165, need a wider cradle and think of adding nearer to 30 pds overall. I think the triple is out would be seen as a heavy pig and would not make inroads into the twins on the top of the heap.

Hmm in 2008 the SX 700 was almost a hundred pds heavier then a 600 Doo or a 800 Doo if that helps.
