If your normal riding isn't just on glare ice for radar running, I would go with 22/38 or 23/40 gearing. I've tried 24/38, 24/40 and 23/40. 23/40 works the best for me. Just my 2 cents.

SpecRTX, What is your best top speed with the 23/40? I have 23/38 now but I have a 39 that I may add. Do you do a lot of lake running?

i thought i read you cant change your bottom gear in a reverse modle? i also heard you can go to a 23 top and gain take off and loose no top end.

In almost all situations, you will lose no top end with a 23t. The sled just won't pull the gear in most if not all conditions. You can change out the bottom gear on reverse models, just make sure you order the appropriate part# for reverse model sleds. They cost more. About 110. 25 or so for the top cog. 22/38 would work fine, but you'll need to spring for a chain. If you go 23/39, you can use your stock chain. You also get a better angle between the tensioner and the bottom gear using a 39t. This setup works great for me and is a cheap way to add trail performance.

Charged RTX,
I'd say I do about 50% lake running, but it's snow covered lakes (not glare ice). I was out yesterday in six inches of powder doing 119 mph (dream meter). I had to let off due to the trail head coming up. It had ALOT more left and was still climbing fast. I would say on hard pack it should top out around 132 mph (again dream meter). The side affect is a big increase in mid range. Last year I was geared 24/40. With that gearing, I know that the sled would not pull that kind of mph in six inches of power. I would definitely try the 39. For my riding the 23/40 flat out rocks!

I replaced the 24T with a 23T in my 06 RTX and was very pleased. Stronger mid-range and NO loss of top end in any conditions I've tried. In fact, in most conditions I think I picked up a little top end. I think the only time the 24T would be faster would be on perfect ice.
