Throttle safety switch? What does it do, and is there an easy way to locate it?
That would be the TORS you described checking in your first post. The instructions to bypass the TORS are found in the troubleshooting section of your owner's manual, page 9-1 for the Apex ER.

If it is in fact the TORS causing your backfiring it will likely be due to the throttle cable being out of adjustment.

Thank you, I just never heard it called the safety switch before. I will try that this weekend and then plugs if that does not work.

Thanks for all the replies.

I bypassed the TORS this weekend and I am still getting backfiring.

I then replaced all four plugs. This took a very long time by the way, I am glad we should not have to replace these under normal circumstances. The new plugs did not fix the backfiring either.

The sled will be going to the dealer this weekend. Hopefully they can figure it out.

my apexgt is doing it to ive changed the plugs didnt help i think something going wrong in the cumputer or fuel deliver system thats why alot of us dont have topend like we had before

I have adjusted throttle cable still had poping then I richened up fuel screws to 3 turns out ,no change.I could hear a slight exhaust leak under sled and replaced the exhaust doughnuts(they were shot) no more backfiring.I had forgot all about it untill I seen this thread again.

Im not exactly shure why the doughnuts would have any effect on back firing on deceleration but it did on mine.

My dealer looked over the sled completely and eventually found a vacuum line that had a leak in it. They are confident that this was the problem. I will know for sure next winter as they were not able to test it, due to no snow.

On another note I also had to have 32 clips added to the track....

Doughnut's leaking will provide the unburnt gases frome throttle chop with a source of oxygen to ignite inside your exhaust system (back fire) that would normaly not get oxygen till it is out of the exhaust that will result in flames if the exhaust is hot enough like after a long hard pull. It look's cool in the dark. Friend's have seen this frome the rear of my Apex, Obveously not on Yamaha's and that is why they were behind me. LOL Also i think there has been a few problem's reported with the flex pipes cracking just off the head and that would suply oxygen as well. kviper

Well this is funny stuff, people are now just reporting about backfiring and flames,we have had flames on all 3 of our apex sleds all around 2,000 miles and on long lake runs of wfo they all shoot 2-3 foot flames as you let off the gas lol looks cool at night, but does not sound right..

My "05" Rage had TORS probelms all the time until the dealer finally made the proper repair and that is exactly what happens. It backfires until the rpm comes down low enough. Good luck, dealer time.

Mdkuni in regards to your track clips missing take a good look at the plastic end caps at the front of your slide rails. They have one rivet through them - I have seen these become very loose over time and cause the track to shimmy around at the front of the rails and then the track clips get pulled off from the L-shaped part of the clip catching the square edge at the start of the hyfax (you will see marks on the front of the hyfax from the clips catching them). You can either re-rivet them on or run a bolt and washer through them if the hole is all stretched out.

Thank you very much for the info. I actually did notice that those caps were quite loose and had some decent marks on them, but I was not sure how normal it was. I will have to take a closer look next time and look for marks on the front of the hyfax as you stated. Thanks again.

All these incidents, except for the bad donuts, sound like TORS adjustments. There is a test methodology and an adjustment procedure in the owners manual. I would be a bit hesitant to just disconnect it, unless the disconnect was just for testing. I had an ole' AC ZR stick WOT once. For a second or so, it is a bit unnerving.

In my case the backfire is from a leaking exhaust. the donut are backorder until may.

If anyone followed my TY ride report you know the backfiring was not fixed. I have the sled in for service and thanks to TY I was able to ask them to check the exhaust donuts.

They checked them and found they were bad. Not only were the donuts bad, but the pipes all the way back to the muffler were bad as well. Dealer said $1000 worth of parts. Am I glad I signed up for the YES warranty! Looks like I am out for a weekend though, that really stinks. They have been getting hit hard in the Charlevoix area.

Hopefully my mileage will improve with the repairs.

Can't believe the pipes failed in one year of riding. Doesn't seem right. I rode my rx-1 for 3 seasons 12,000 miles original exhaust, no problems. Does some have a picture of the exhaust donuts. Not sure where you are talking about on the pipe.
