Newbie here,
I have an '06 Attak with just over 13000 miles that I bought new. It's been a great sled, but the axle broke end of last season. I'm just getting around to fixing it and was also thinking of putting in a new chain & gears while I'm at it but noticed I have 18/38 gears with a 70 pin chain. Is this top gear correct? Everything I've searched tells me it should be 23/38. Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance-

A 70 link will not work with that gearing, will it?. Are you sure its an 18??
With an 18 top gear that thing must scream up to 60 then fall flat on its face.
Very odd.

The chain does wrap around the tensioner pretty far, but it's worked fine for 13000 miles. I counted everything 3 times and verified it's 18/38 with a 70 chain. I bought it new and have never changed this.

I'll have to admit it does sound rather strange. What's your top end speed? Like mentioned, it must screaming at about 60 mph.... I honestly can't see there being enough travel on the tensioner with that small of gear and that long of chain. The mountain sleds only run 20/40 with a 68 link chain. Idk what to tell ya other than check it again. Should be 23/38 with 70 chain... Post a picture... That will help a bunch....

That's the reverse idler gear, not the top gear. I suspect you have the usual 23t top gear. Keep digging.

Ok, now I feel dumb. The top gear is 23 and it's still on the sled. I was having tunnel vision; had 2 gears in my hands and that was my focus.
Thanks for the help-
