Looking for help. Recently purchased a classic, 96 ovation for my kids! Machine looks great and runs strong. Giving it a going over, and put a new belt on. Now it seems to squeal at idle, and wants to creep a little. Squealing seems to stop when underway, as soon as I hit the brake it starts again. Am I correct this indicates deflection issue? If so any suggestions how to back off the secondary on this model? Thanks in advance.

You are correct it is a deflection issue, or in other words the belt is to tight. I don't think there is an adjustment on those secondaries but could be wrong. If you are using an aftermarket belt that could be the issue, they are sometimes not the exact dimensions of the OEM belts. If you are using an OEM belt then you'll have to live with it. Either way the squeal will go away with a little wear of the belt.

If memory serves you need to remove the secondary clutch, split the sec. (with a compression tool and circlip pliers to remove the helix) and then add a shim between the fixed sheave and movable sheave. If you look at one of the exploded view "cartoons" within the parts finder it will give you a better idea than my explanation here. The # and thickness of the shims between the two sheaves controls your belt deflection by adjusting how high the belt sits in the secondary at rest. Most of the older yammies liked the belt a touch BELOW flush with the top of the secondary.

You need to add a shim. This will open the sec. clutch slightly and give you a little more belt deflection.
Thanks for the input. I will give that a try.not sure I mentioned, if I lift the track off the ground, and there is no load on it at all the squealing also stops.
