Belt Squeal

I'll take a look during spring service. Again, we are most likely done for the year. I really hate to delete it. If I do, I'd prefer a catch can vs dumping to the ground/atmosphere. I've considered leaving it in place and moving the hose from the air box to a catch can. I agree putting the oil through the intake system will ultimately create a mess. I deleted my wife's MB but didn't do the CCV. Her turbo, intercooler, and intake are full of oil. I'll be rerouting that and cleaning the system this spring.

A catch can will also freeze up creating problems for the oil tank seal. Ask Mr. Sled about that one.

With yamaha put it on stand rev the motor to spin track and let coast to stop then check deflection spec or as many mentioned belt should be flush with sheave or just a 1 mm over...imo

With cat 998 there is no deflection adjustment due to the roller bearing between primary sheaves..
With cat 3/16 to 1/4 past sheave is where it sits

Had a friend that switched out to a new style heated roll over valve and now its spewing oil right onto the clutch and belt from the airbox.

Why would the heated ROV do this compared to the previous non heated for your friend?

Trying to understand why its an issue on this engine. Apex\Vector oil tank breather hose goes in the air box too but never seen any complain of freezing hose or worries about dirty air filter much. Personally I just wash the air box once a year on mine.

How about the 900T, I searched and searched and no one is complaining about it. What have they done on their turbo engine that works better regarding this?

The way they had the ROV in the early versions, the outlet dumped downstream of the airbox right before the turbo in the tube from the airbox to the turbo. You could always see a pool of oil in the low portion of tube.

With the new version of the heated ROV, the dumb azz engineers decided to dump the hose right into the airbox, now the residual oil runs down , soaks the air clenaer on the bottom, drains down the airbox and onto the clutch and belt after enough time.

As for the 900t, we don't care about it and what they doo with them.

So, I just checked mine. Only 485 miles on the sled. I could squeeze the air filter and oil just dripped from it. Disgusted at how saturated it was. As you said, there was a stream of oil to the lowest portion of the airbox where it has no place to go but leak out of the seam of the air box that is, you guessed it, directly over the belt and primary.... Obviously I can't yet verify that this was the cause of the squeal definitively, but I can tell you I will be deleting the rov regardless............................

Mike usually does not get it wrong to often. Get rid of the POS ROV.

Yes, I'm the one that Mike was referring to...what a disastrous change from Yamaha and all with this new ROV will have this problem. I put a temporary rag in air box and cleaned clutches and belt. Went out yesterday and had very significant power increase with 240sm and no more squeal!!!

2021 currently with 375 miles

Noticed the belt squealing after decelerating almost to a stop and giving it light throttle again to continue on. Also does it from a stop once in a while. Does have some belt rubber on the primary and a fairly good groove worn in. The groove is more than I would expect for 375 miles. Machine is 100% stock running the Yamaha belt. I do have an XS I plan to install after my Thunder Products secondary adjuster shows up.

Another concern, which may or may not have anything to do with the squeal, is the machine seems really tight. What I mean is, it doesn't roll well and requires more throttle to get moving than I would expect and considerably more than my friend '17 with 2k miles. It's better than the day I bought it but would have expected it to loosen up by now. No brake lock needed when parking facing down on a hill. Track is tensioned correctly and nothing seems out of sorts.
Our 2020 ltx gt does the exact same thing. It definitely acts like the secondary is not closing fast enough. Even if your not using the brake it still does it. Ours now has 2,200 miles on now. You dont have to come to a complete stop. Just slow to about 15 mph in a corner and accelerate back up to speed. It will squeal jump and then grab. And there is a pile of belt dust all over the left side. But every winder i ride with has a lot of dust.

I have not checked to see if the roll over valve dumped snot on the belt yet. But it definitely has froze up multiple times and blew oil all over my wifes right leg. Pushed oil from the oil tank seal. Will look into that before i take it to the dealer for the laundry list of issues!

Deleting the ROV is the only way to fix the issues with it. I'm certain you'll see oil running on to the clutch and belt with enough miles. STILL a f'ing joke and clearly Cat never tested this for ANY amount of miles. Easy fix though.

As for the secondary not closing, another easy fix, Dalton Black/Orange spring wrapped up around 70-80 on a stock sled.

I do agree it feels like the secondary is not closing fast enough and was my first thought. I don't recall any quick, track lockup stops, which would magnify a backshift issue. It happens even on general trail riding stops. I just looked and the belt is even with the edge of the secondary, which according to the manual is in the middle of the spec. Should I adjust it different?

You need a stiffer secondary spring or you will destroy belts like this.

If your blowing oil on a riders right foot or leg the ROV IS freezing up and the oil tank gasket it compromised. You need to have the oil tank seal redone. Get rid of the ROV. Plenty of reading on here about it. Don’t expect the dealer to delete the ROV. They will not do it. And most dealers don’t have a clue what’s going on with these winders.

Yeah i was planning on deleting it. First i was going to take it in under warranty. The dealer will make a case on it. They will find nothing wrong. But at least yamaha will have another case on it.
The more cases they have the more they will realize there is an actual issue and possibly address it!

Good dealers read this site, and do not mind sharing their learning experiences of Winders with clientele.

Just wish they would join our membership.

For sure!! Just to many that will not admit to KNOWN ISSUES on these sleds. I have mentioned the drive shaft and they fail to admit it’s a failure waiting to happen. Let’s face it the average guy is not going to service the drive shaft bearing and put a BOP wedge in!! They shouldn’t have to either!!

Is Drantell still on the site ? Not sure if that is the right name .
