What is the best way to get the plastic gas tank cover off of a 05 RX-1? Do I have to remove the handlebars and unhook all the cables, or is there an easier way that I may be overlooking? Can the plastic gas tank piece with the hole for the handlebars somehow be snaked off the handlebars without unhooking everything?

Nope sorry you have to remove everything. The wiring all unplugs nice, the brake cable is removed and has to be bleed when reinstalled (not hard), the throttle and choke are easily removed. Then you ready.

Just a quick FYI, I recently had mine off this summer when I changed my hood, seat and tank cover, switching my sled from liquid silver to yamaha blue and did not need to open the hydraulic system, just unbolt the brake assembly from the handle bar
