Just got a new Warrior and I was curious on starting conditions in this frigid cold. Is a block heater worth the money or are they good to go in this -30 degrees celsius plus weather?
Great site by the way. :yam:

My 03' started in -30 on Drumond Island last winter,It surprised me,turned over slow but fired up. But I think a block heater would be a great investment for a rx/rs, maybe for 06' they will be standard equipment or they should be anyways

Not block heater,, Inline heater instead..

I have a 05 RX-1 and we sled where the temp. is -30 to -40 plenty of times. I bought a inline heater out of the yamy accessory cat. for 37 bucks and installed it myself. Took about 1 hour. The first cold spell of -30 below I plugged it in for 3 hours and when I started the sled I never even needed the choke. Works fantastic.

One great item is the Optimate charger Yamaha sells. Hook that up if your sled is going to sit for more than a few days. It hooks up easy to that white plug by the jumper extensions. It conditions as well as charges your battery. It is about $50.
Actually it is free when you consider you will replace batteries less often :D

Advantage to a heater is less wear and tear on the engine when the engine is extremely cold. Yes the sled will start without a heater but starts much harder and will take much longer to warm up with more engine wear than using a heater.Disadvantage is it's not always convenient to plug a heater in at night if your at a motel.

I dont find a need for a block heater.

My sleds have started up down to about -30 F and they still turned over pretty fast with some 0-40.

They have to turn for at least 30 seconds sometimes when this cold to fire. But once it fires it purrs like a kitten. The Rs starts up easyer than the rx.

When my rx's were new they has a hard time to crank at -20. when broken in they turned much easyer at -30 but I had also changed oil's.

Skip the block heater and just put synthetic oil in once its done break-in. You will be amazed how much faster it cranks, and faster cranking almost always equals faster starting. We had a full month of sub zero weather, with many mornings of -20 to -30. I had dino oil in for the first of the cold spell, and it always started, but was sometimes a little stubborn and it definately cranked slower. Once I put synthetic in, it cranked the same at -30 as it does at 30 above.

Block heater is a very easy install and is cheap as well. Two weeks ago it was -31F with -70F windchill in the morning. My Warrior with a block heater fired right up and idle smoothly right away. My buddies RX1 without the heater wouldn't start the first try. It would barely turn over, we got the jumper cables out but it started the 2nd try.
