Wonder if they mean belt life is decreased by taking off hard/running it hard when cold first thing? Who knows....but that is first i ever heard that for an explanation....typically you will get the standard.."did you break in the belt?"I heard exactly this cold belt theory from my dealer who said they got the info from Yamaha.

Yeah I don't know. I live in Maryland so most here have ridden more miles than me but I've been sledding seriously since 1997 and never done #*$&@ to a belt for breakin or washed it or prep in any way. I've only broke 2 belts (both with multi-thousands of miles) in about 15000 miles on my Apex Attaks and none yet on the Winder but when the next belt breaks I might remember to check for the arrow and put it on in the right direction. The cold belt story doesn't jive with what the riders here have reported but I know there's no benefit in prolonging a debate with my dealer (who I like and trust) when it doesn't affect me directly yet.

Quick question about the shims behind the secondary for setting offset. My offset is 59.69mm so I was going to add a 1mm shim so it's closer to 61mm. Can I just make my own shim out of regular shim stock or should I see if I can get one from Yamaha?

Dont think there is anything magical about the Yam shims....whatever you have that is the correct fit, and thickness to get near your target offset should be fine.Quick question about the shims behind the secondary for setting offset. If this really was a cold belt or improper belt break in issue I would like to see if the same percentage of ThunderCats are having the same issue. I have been following the SW/TCat pages on facebook and have seen so many "I broke another belt" posts, not one of them has been a TCat, all SW's. Just sayN.....

the cat belt is a very pricy hi heat belt, it reminds me of the 391 doo belt. While the 8dn and i believe 8jp are not especially made for big power. So I wonder if the belt alone is just not up to the task?
Seems odd the same belt that comes on a viper stock, comes on a SW with far far more HP.
I just assumed the cat belt will not fit a SW, but if it was close enough to make work, it would be an easy test if we can run cat belt on SW.

Just guessing but I bet it might not work. Wonder if they are same length? You could measure the belt side angles. Not sure but the Team may have a different sheave angle. One guy that might know is Jim Dimmerman. I see he posts occasionally on the FB threads. He likely runs a Thundercat.

I'm not a viper owner, but I don't think the big power viper guys are blowing belts. And I believe they are using the 8dn

The Viper has the standard quo reverse cam button secondary. The new SW has a new roller cam secondary. So it's hard to compare being they are running different clutches.

It may be the difference between the 2 secondarys maybe but I can tell you that I have been running big HP (264) for 3 yrs now and at first the Viper was blowing belts every 100 miles or so. I had the coil bind removed by machining the pocket and overdrive machined into the primary sheaves by Hauck. When Ulmer re-did the sled he junked all of Hauck's work and re-did everything and machined both sheaves of the primary not one for overdrive. After that I had over 1500 miles of hard riding and drag racing on 1 belt which was an 8DN Carlisle ultimax 3. If I ever get the sled back from Ulmer I will let you know how long the belts last at 365 hp.
