i have a question about amont of freeplay in chaincase of an attak. the freeplay im talking about is the amount that when you grab brake disc by hand move clockwise till contact then rotate counterclockwise till contact.
i must have at least 90 degrees of rotation. i can feel and hear it if im going slow and grab the brakes hard "bang". same as when you engage in reverse and give a little too much throttle "bang" maybe not a loud bang but still not a pleasent sound. i have owned yamaha for decades this is my first sled with a reverse is this normal. i have checked and tighened chain by the way. (thats not the problem)
:o| :o|

I am not sure about the brake, but i know there is supossed to be some play in the secondary, almost 90 degrees of play until contact each way, as the Apex's have reverse.

I have the same dilemma as I just put on a new track and reassembled the chaincase and I noticed the same thing. Manually spin the track forward and it catches...then manually spin the track the other way and you spin the track a a little before the gears "catch". I think it has to do with the pockets (both inner and outer gear) that fit into each other on the inside of the bottom reverse gears Is this normal? I did not happen to notice before I disassembled now I am questioning if I reassembled properly.

Check out pick of reverse gears below to see what I'm talking about.

It's normal, and yes, it's the space where the two lower gears touch each other.

Thanks. You nailed it..totally normal. Took everything apart again and reassembled (just to ease my mind it was right). The slight backwards forwards play appears to be totally normal.

I (and I'm sure nbattak) were just nervous I was going to start it, run the track and hear *CLUNK* from the chaincase. Not the case though. Track moved fine...reverse worked fine. All is good. Thanks

Oh yeah, nb attak...sorry to hijack your thread but hopefully you got the answer you were looking for too.

what happens is....

The chain is on the lower gear, but the lower gear is NOT attached to the driveshaft it just spins. Rather the reverse gear is attached to the driveshaft. The lower gear 'couples' the reverse gear when you are NOT in reverse, and the reverse gear turns forward with the lower gear and inturn, turns the driveshaft.

Put the sled into reverse, and the fork pulls the lower 'reverse' gear away from the lower chain gear. The chain still turns forward, but the lower reverse gear is now spinning backwards off the reverse IDLER gear, turning the driveshaft BACKWARDS!!

Get it? LOL!! I hope my explanation is clear enough!!!!

2 97 600 XTC,s combined mileage 11,000 miles. 1 2001 Venture, 7,000 miles. 1 02 Viper ER 12,000 milles. 1 06 Attak 2400 miles. YES, they ALL clunk LOL. Have had zero issues on all of these reverse equipped sleds. The gears are very durable and strong. I ABUSED the Viper from day one and longtracked it with 8,000 miles on it. This system isn't as polished as the electronic systems, but it IS bulletproof!

Thank you very much viper dave thats exactly what i was looking for, someone with alot of miles on reverse yammis. Ill get use to the "clunk" sound.
Im always listening to machine for strange sounds. I had phazers, exciters, old v-max 540, srv, vmax 700sx, srx. None had reverse, this "clunk" in chaincase was new to me. thanks for the peace of mind

I'll back-up Viper Daves statement, a bunch of our old Yammis have reverse, zero troubles with them. The bottom gears/dogs are real strong. The clunk is from the gap in the dogs required to allow shifting of the gears.

13,000 miles on my old SXr 700, 10,000 miles on the old girlfreinds SXr 600, Viper with 5,000 miles, buds SXr 700 with 7,000 miles, zero issues.

I was out riding today and noticed the "bang" sound when you lock up the track going really slow, kinda had me worried because it isn't the nicest sound but it sounds like its normal.
