While stripping the sled down to change the track, we found 2 tabs broke completly off and 2 others cracked on the chain case cover on my xtx viper, sled has 380km on it and chain case never been opened up, something to pay attention too !

Checked mine last week and so far so good. The screws take very little torque so any force on even a short wrench will/could break the tabs. If your not used to torquing in inch pounds, do yourself a favor and rent or borrow a torque wrench.

105 inch pounds = 8.75 foot pounds torque.

Many men that work with their hands can generate 5 ft. Lbs of torque or 60 inch pounds with their bare hands, actually, just thumb and forefinger.

What causes that? Is is just from bring over tightened or is it from being ridden?

I took mine in for the 500 mile service and all checked out ok.

Also, check those little black screws holding on the wind shield right next to the gage. Both mine fell out. Have new ones coming in on order. Deal did not have any in stock.

Yes definitely use a torque wrench. I have seen mechanics with many years of experience break those tabs thinking they could do it by feel.

Trying to remember but those were dealer installed at PDI right?

those wern't touched, I uncrated the sled my self, didn't need any oil, and only 380km of easy riding, they were like that from the factory !

My dealer found 1 broken cover ear at the top.. no leaks so they are leaving it for now until the Yamaha part comes off backorder. Cat has the covers available. They are a Cat dealer and said they see those ears broken off all the time on first service. Apparently Cat tends to over-torque them at the factory.
