I've noticed that on the apex clutches both the roller pins and weight pins are locked with set screws.
On vector/rage clutches only the weight pins are locked with set screws.
On a phazer clutch neither the weight or roller pins are locked with set screws.
Anybody know the reasoning behind this?
One guy I sell to says he likes the apex clutches and claims they are quiter than the 3 cylinder clutches. I am suspecting the reason for less noise on an apex clutch is the roller pin can slide around like it can on a vector clutch.

the reason its quieter is the reduction unit...it removes engine pulses...the set screws are a belt and suspenders effort...if one retainer fails others are present..

I have noticed this, even thought about modding my Vector but decided it was a bad idea. I have also heard that somewhere in the gear reduction of the Apex there is a rubber bushing that takes out some of the engine pulses. I'm sure there is more to it but we may never know.

I looked at my buddy's apex clutch this week end
How much do you sell apex clutches for I may need to get one soon

You can drill and tap any other models clutch to accept set screws if you want. You can see where to drill in the casting. They all come from the same mold, no need to buy a different clutch.

You can have the faces machined, better than new and much cheaper.

Yes and if you do this you can have them machined for overdrive. I had this done to my high mileage Viper clutches from a machinist at my work. The only thing is I had to reload my weights to a bit lighter grams because the overdrive acts like an extra gear and it loaded my motor down some. Might not be as noticeable on a 4 stroke as a 2 stroke though.
