Clutching on the cheap

I love the clutching idea and extra performance but wondering what it will do to fuel economy. Not that I'm a mieser but I do a lot of long distance runs with no gas stops available and can't really take a big hit on mileage.

Sorry for all the questions so your saying just the shim would give me smooth engagement or shim and spring?

Just doing the shims? my mistake...I thought you were going to install the kit....my bad. It will engage a little higher.

Where do you ride mostly? if you are looking for more speed I don't think you want the shims alone....Stingray did the shim kit to have more bottom end and mid range.....you might not gain top end mph.
I'm not looking for more speed I can already hit 100 mph stock. I'd just like smooth engagement from a stand still without it jumping like 10 feet every time I just touch the throttle

You will see an improvement on fuel mileage. My best so far has been 17.7 mpg riding down trails or normal driving.

Shagman with his turbo and 8FP setup was seeing a huge improvement on fuel mileage also.

No problem at all, that's what I love about the site :) we are all here to help.

I can only vouch for the smooth engagement, incredible arm pull and top speeds of over 100mph because I use the entire setup and it works.

If you are stock, adding shims to the original weights would/should raise rpms on engagement and on top end (this is my results of course). You are wanting to lower engagement so it's not as harsh or jumpy. My mind is trying to figure out what would need to be done to get lower engagement without sacrificing top end....but the only way I can see this happening is if a softer spring was installed and weight was taken out of the primary weights to bring back the rpms to top end. But in my mind and the reason I took these stock weights out was because they weren't grabbing the belt enough at higher rpm, causing a tremendous amount of belt dust and darkening of the clutches.... Hope this answers your question. You are one of the lucky ones who is hitting 100mph stock.

I think you could go to a (orange-pink-orange) and keep total force for top end. This spring really reduces force at the bottom end for engagement. I have one on order to try in my turbo sled. I will report back when I test it.

Running orange pink orange in my turbo right now, tried a couple others but loving the orange pink orange, 2800 engagement and no jerky feel at all at slow speeds. Shagman I pulled all the idle fuel on mine and the launch is perfect about 90% of the time now! Only get a slight bobble once in a great while now

If I remember right when stingray picked up his blue viper from the dealer he did just the shim and claimed it gained more power by feel, is that because it allowed the engine to just rev up more and made it so the weights didn't shift out as fast and bog down?

Yes just the shim raised engagement rpm by a small amount but it added performance through the range after engagement, if you are looking for smooth engagement you must get rid of the stock weights. The shim only does help but the spring and weights is where you really want to be, and for less than 200 bucks why not? :sled1:

Forgot to ask if you got that spring I sent? I tried some of the shorter springs (like O/S/O) but did not like how they worked with the 8Fp weights, but you run a diff set of weights so I am glad you found what works for you. For others that wish to experiment please do and if you find something we missed please post it. That's what this is all about, helping each other.

Has anyone else tried the Orange Yellow Orange spring? Really like the engagement vs Orange Pink Orange.Very little effect on top rpm.
