Controversy, stud or dont stud

Ditching the ripsaw track and going with either the Hacksaw or the 9830 track with 192 studs!
Hey allen why you doing this, more top speed,i did the same thing last year on my confusion, went to the 9830,traded it to my dealer for the 1.25 ripsaw, but ended up wishing i had left the ripsaw on,i saw no added top speed w/the 9830 and i changed out the 9 tooth drivers for the 10 tooth and geared down to match roughly the same top speed,it got me quicker out of the hole and midrange but lost top speed. Hope you have better luck than i did.. Pete

Thread edited to take out all the derogatory elements anybody have a problem with this let me know. This is a good debate and a topic that should be discussed feel free to comment and state your opinions but keep it friendly or it will be locked. Of couse i have my own opinion on this and thats to each his own as long as you drive safely you can ride with me anytime. There are definitely times when studs are a big asset but i hate what they do to my garage floor ;)!

Let it snow let it snow let it snow :D
Steve i couldent agree w/you more, but here in southern Maine we get alot of rain and icy corners,as much as i would like to run my attak stud free i cant take that chance.

I will add what I am doing with my Attak.

In the past 2 years I ran 1.18 studs with a 1 1/4 track. Had lots of traction, (noticed by my wheelie-craze), but was still able to be in controll on ice, lakes, and bad corners. (oops, forgot about that one Convert.) The pics, even tho they are 1.18 stick past the lugs about .200 of an inch, and actually keep the lugs from tearing and bending. Thanks to Matt from the Speed Shop, I use the Stud Boy power plate backers, and will never change.

Here it is:

The lugs on the side are just a little shorter with the angle on the side. I put 1.18 woody's Excell studs on the sides (54), and (108) in the center with the 1.325 Golddiggers. All supported by you guessed it....................Power Plate backers.

{This topic clearly shows that people have their own choice to stud or not to stud. I, myself ride where there are hills, and ditches you need to climb up, or go down. A snowmobiler would have to take running starts without studs, and would still spin the snow off.}

Either way you go, use judgement, stay right & be safe!

If you want to stud, STUD

If you don't want to stud DON'T

If you want an opinion on brand or length or quanity, ask for it in a new thread, lets let this thread DIE........

I'll second that

Riding this weekend in tug hill, went up a very steep hill, turns out the trail was closed because of a real icy patch 3/4 up the hill. Did not know this of course as the guy leading and everyone else was studded...not the new 07 attak I got, got 3/4 up, came to a stop and started sliding backwards rapidly as the two other sleds behind me started coming my way..they both managed to avoid me..barely and I luckily got the sled to stop....scariest moment of my sledding career. Ordered studs today and that will never happen again...if I give up a few top end mph it will be well worth that never happening again. For anyone who wants to know the trail it is the trail between the Towpath and C'Ville...real nasty, bumpy and ice...looks like a mine field but on a aspen ski hill.....out

Another 2-cents worth of opinion: A 150hp sled really benefits from studs on acceleration, you can get by without studs on a 120hp sled. This is opinion & bsaed on my experience but obviously, everyone's got different preferences. My next sled will be 120hp class w/no studs.

As you read thru this thread , look at the answer then where the person lives !!!

Western people don't want or need studs ,

Us, up here in icy Ontario, ( sometimes 1000 sleds per day thru our trails ) , need studs !!!!!!

Personal choice , Yes , but studs (brakes) are cheaper than a bent sled or a broken leg !!!!!!!!

2007 rtx , 96 1.325 double plated Woody's down the middle for me please !!!!

5000k plus per year , no track problems.

I agree with gsxr, you have to look at what kind of riding you do most. If you have awesome groomed trails, without a lot of steep grades and icy surfaces, sure don't stud. I ran my '06 GT unstudded all last season. I studded 1/2 waly through this season, and I wish I had done it immediately when I got it. We have alot of crappy ditch trails, and the trails trough town(s) get so beat down and icy, it's hard to accelerate to get moving. I got stuck in the middle of the street with oncoming traffic early this season, and almot got T-boned by a truck, because I was trying to push my sled with new Woody's Dooley's on it across the street! The carbides stopped my sled instantly on the concrete, and the track was still on the ice. Now that I have studs, I don't look like an idiot (I know...)crossing a road.
Nate
