It really depends on why the engine needs to be re-built. What's the problem?

Attached is pricing for the parts you listed, but I wouldn't expect that you would need them all. Unless the engine was really detonating, or starved for oil, your bearings will probably be ok. I think you have a SC Apex? If this is a typical too much boost/not enough octane failure, I'd expect the following when the motor is opened up:

  • Erosion of the intake side of piston dome. Usually 1-2 cylinders, not very often you lose all 4
Probability of cylinder wall damage to at least one bore. Any anti-freeze in your oil?
Deposits on valve seats from the aluminium being consumed

If the block is hurt, you're looking at about ~$500 plus shipping for it to go out to be re-nik'd. Add labor for going through the head - valves, seats, re-shimming. Then there is all of the labor to size new rings and re-assemble the block. Say a few hundred for the head, and another ~$500 for assembling the block.

Best guess is $6-700 in parts, $500 to repair block, and another ~$800 labor to make it an engine again. Sounds expensive, but you wouldn't have trouble finding a more expensive estimate. For budget purposes, I'd say around $2k if the block is hurt, $1.5K if it isn't.

On a related note, I have a good customer who bought a spare Apex engine 4 years ago shortly after I built his turbo sled. His thinking was that if he took a motor out, he didn't want to be down for more than a few days. I would have installed the spare in the event that something happened, and then he had plans for how the hurt engine would be re-built. He never had a problem and the spare is still sitting on the shelf. His sled was stolen in December, and I think his next build is going to be a Nytro, so this motor is likely for sale. He's a member on this site, so if you want to look at this as an option send me a PM and I'll connect you.

Hope this helps.
