I've been reading about the changes made for the 2016 vector motor which include a new crankshaft, pistons, and rods in addition to some electronic control gadgetry. My impression is that the vector 1049 and the viper 1049 have historically been essentially the same, except that that the viper/nytro motor was tuned more aggressively. I don't understand putting money into that engine for the vector and not the viper. Surely they must be selling many more vipers? Does this give us any insight into Yamaha strategy? Are they devolving a new motor for the viper which means they might as well leave it alone for 2016 to introduce something breathtaking next year? Did the vector motor really need improving? I don't understand the thinking here. I'd love to hear anyone's insights.
I think the changes were due to a supplier change from prior posts on the subject.

The new Vector motor is also designed around the YCCT throttle.

The 2016 Viper has a new valve cover (same as what is on the YXZ 1000R & Vector), the lower crankcase half also has a few new bosses molded into it, and the cam chain tensioner is different as well. So there is definitely some changes in the 2016 SR Viper motor. I haven't been into one any further than that yet (to inspect rods or pistons or crank) to see if there is any other changes.

I was told at haydays from a good source that Arctic cats new factory turbo will be using this engine in 2017

New crank, rods, pistons, some electronics (knock sensor)...who's gonna buy one when its a factory turbo engine? A true factory turbo, not dealer installed. They wouldn't make the change to the viper because I'm sure they want to keep that their spunky trail machine. Hopefully this new engine has the same power potential of the cat 1100 turbo!
If they want it to work they will leave the Yamaha ecu with it

With all the potential that cat had with the 1100 T I hope they do the same type of setup but with the 3 cylinder yammi engine that'd be awesome!
All they need to do is put a gear reduction on and let us run 10500 like that YXZ. Dont need a Turbo anymore. 170 hp with regular mods easy!

The main change I see, is it will make the Vector which is already rafter then the Viper on Top end, will make it that much faster.

If they changed the engine internals...which we know they have, they did it to lower the compression which won't make it faster, until it's boosted that is!
Hope not. This motor already is held back.If they changed the engine internals...which we know they have, they did it to lower the compression which won't make it faster, until it's boosted that is!

It's all very interesting. If a factory turbo was offered for the cat With Yamaha 1049 engine I hope they would offer it with the viper too. From my research The main problem with the 1100 cat turbo was belt blowing due to poor engine mounting to the frame. The engine produced so much power that it would twist the engine and make the primary and secondary not be aligned and then blow a belt. Others said that the cat clutches were just bad from the start and that caused the belt issue. Even with these problems people bought a ton of these. It seems the snowmobile buyer values top performance over reliability. Otherwise Yamaha would be number 1 hands down. That being said if Yamaha was a bit more aggressive and increased their research budget a bit they could make the best sleds around.

Engine was improved for the side by side which they do plan on making money on. Change wasn't for us snowmobile guys.
