Check out the new Polaris snow trails app for smartphones. It has all the trails in the US in it. Its free and will make a seperate GPS obsolete. It has a mileage logger, wayponts for planning trips and is just great for finding your way back to trails when boondocking.

I downloaded this app last year - it's alright! Nothing to ride home about.

It works great as long as you have cell coverage. Riding in MI UP last year with it I had little to no cell coverage so it was useless.

X2!.......and for whatever reason it likes to reset itself. I don't even bother with it anymore.

Yep didnt work well at all and with no cell coverage in the north was worthless, that and phone was slower when froze. The garmin Nuvi mounted on the bars was much better option for me, works fantastic and fast.

+1 on the cell coverage... The app has no cache capability, or at least it didn't last year. No cell coverage = paperweight app. It wouldn't be hard to make it completely autonomous from the cell system, just highlight the area you want to cache/download ahead of time, and no need for a data connection.

They have an update this year. I don't know if the no cell service issue has been updated , but I would be shocked if it wasn't.

What do you guys think these things will do with no service? How does a phone know where it is, or where its went if it has nothing to reference off of? Sure it may have GPS but it still requires maps.. These aren't loaded onto a phone, and would take a ton of space if they were. Maps are loaded by streaming and require data to do it.
FYI: North America is around 2gb on a normal GPS.

Location isn't a problem... Pretty much every smartphone out has a real gps chip in it today. Cell assisted gps is only used when gps is turned off to save battery, and you only need a rough location.
There are 'real' mapping applications on a phone that allow you to highlight/select an area, and it will download that into ram. Some of the more current apps are doing it automatically, when they have a chance they will grab X square miles around you. Like I said, it wouldn't take much for whoever developed that app to make that change.
Interestingly enough, there is another Polaris nav app that does exactly this!

* With a tool-set that includes online and offline maps,
* Cache map data for offline use and access maps when you don't have a network connection.

Another one for Android users: check out the OruxMaps app. When I was shopping for a new GPS, I was researching the Garmin Montana when I stumbled across a SxS forum with a bunch of guys using OruxMaps. I bailed on the Montana, bought an Android tablet and Otterbox, and have been very happy with it.

I didn't have much luck with the Polaris app in the U.P. I've read reviews by others saying that you can cache the maps but I don't believe it's true - I couldn't find a way to do it. The app has a lot of promise if they can figure that out.
Another smartphone app I've been watching is the Trailsystems set up. The mounting brackets are available, but as far as I know the app hasn't been released yet. If it works as advertised, it could be pretty cool.
