Friends 09 XTX seems to be draining the battery. He got a new battery for this season and when using the sled it seems to keep the charge fine but when not being used it drains the battery after a few days. He is just wondering if anyone on here has experienced this and if so what they did to fix it. Any help would be appreciated as I am going on a trip with the guy real soon. Thanks in advance.

If he has added options (gauges, lights, etc.) that are tied in to the system in front of the ignition switch might be the first place to look - especially if it's a slow drain. I would expect a short in the system to cause other problems and drain the battery quickly. Also, it's necessary to turn off the key, not just depress the kill switch, when the sled is shutdown.

Is it an intermittent problem? As Arteeex says, does he have any add ons? A simple test will be to unhook the battery when NOT running and see if large sparking occurs. Not sure if these machines draw all the time though...

If it has no added accessories that are causing problems and the wiring harness looks good (no rubs) pull the ignition fuse before letting it set for a few days and see if it still goes dead. The ECU and idle speed control (ISC) are fed directly from the battery (not keyed) so if one of them are defective the battery could be drained.

Make sure that he takes the key out of the thing when he parks it.

battery drain
i had the same thing happen on my 09 nytro xtx, when it was cold the ecu would send a signal to the fuel pump and the pump would run ( drain the battery) KEY OFF, Dealer changed the ecu, problem gone.

Why?
Key has been in my 06 Apex since new pretty much and battery has never gone dead.

I dont mean to intertupt the thread but enticeraised-If i remember right mine didn't spark at all when unhooking and hooking the battery up. I made sure to test for the spark thats what made me question "battery?"

Because it is easier to say and more concrete than ensuring that the key is always left in the OFF position.
If the key is left in the ON position, then it WILL drain the battery.
