ELECTRIC HELMET SHIELD HOOK UP

JUST WAS WONDERING WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO WIRE MY HELMET SHIELD PLUG? JUST BOUGHT MY FIRST FOUR STROKE AND DONT WANT TO MESS ANYTHING UP BEING DIFFERENT. SOMEONE SAID I COULD WIRE IT OFF OF THE IGNITION KEY SWITCH AND SOMEONE SAID THE SMALL JUMPER WIRES WHERE YOU WOULD JUMP START IT BUT IM NOT SURE ON THAT. THANKS FOR ANY HELP

Electric shield wiring

Seems to be a couple different ways to do this. I went directly to the battery and put an inline fuse in the wires so that if I do get a surge the fuse will blow and not my shield. I have had mine like this for 2 years now with no issues. Hope this helps.

I ran mine to the jumper cables since the positive cable for the jumpers already has an inline fuse. That way there is one less fuse to worry about and the installation was pure and simple.

I did mine the same way been 4 years now no issues.

YAMAHA , KIMPEX , both have an adapter for the 12v accessory plug to helmut plug that works perfect , just bump up the fuse to a 10amp

I doubt the warrior is any different and I can only speak for my sled (2003 RX-1) but there is a fuse right next to the battery that the positive battery cable goes to before the battery.

EDIT: I just went out and double-checked and am a little confused. The battery cable goes to a small metal bracket that is connected to a 30 amp fuse but without peeling back the cabling, it looks as if the jumper cable and battery cable are one and the fuse is "T" off the cable. This would mean the the jumper cable is not fused...

I may add a 3-5amp fuse in the heater shield line just to be safe.

Even if the jumper cable had a fuse, which it does not, the fuse would be too large to protect your shield and light wiring it uses. You may want to consider putting a fuse right at the jumper (i.e. wherever you hook into the power, the fuse should to be as close to the source as possible.) The battery is the best place to tie into. But the jumper is convenient. Also, there is a screw in the delta frame, right by the jumpers, which is perfect for the ground.

Becareful when choosing your ground point. I picked some random bolt in front of the battery compartment. After the season was over, I was moving my sled and the hookup for my helmet with the male end fell down and hit the footboard causing sparks. The ground point I chose was directly connected with the chassis and caused a short when the male end of my shield wire touched it.

Connections to the power source should always be female or enclosed male. That way it can not short to tbe center conductor. Which brings up another point, always wire it such that the + wire is the center conductor.
