I know this has been discussed lots before and I did a search and read lots about it. It just confused me more of what to choose
I am new to yamaha 4 stoke sled engines and just want to run oil that will not harm my engine. Preformance is a plus, but not as much as engine protection. In my manual for my 03 rx1 it says to use a 5w-30 oil with an API se,sf,sg or better. What does the API se, sf, sg or better mean. Most of the oils that I can find are API sm, sj. Are they better that se,sf,sg?
When I hear guys saying that they are using amsoil 0-30 and mibile 1 0-30 is this just the regular engine oil or synthetic or what.

I don't know what all of the letters meen, but just use the Yamaha 4 stroke oil 0W30. Yamaha does all kinds of testing on their oils, and to try and use some other cheep oils just isn't worth it. Thats my 2 cents worth.

I would but the problem is, the closest yamaha dealer is 1.5 hours away and if I can get some from my local automotive parts store it would be very convenient. Plus at $16 a liter, I won't be buying it from them anyways.
This is what I ended up buying. It should work

It is regular synthetic. I have been running Mobil 0w40 for years and all is good.

I run Mobil 0W-40W or Amsoil 0W-40W. I have 8000 miles on my 03 RX-1, runs great, very low oil consumption, easy starting.

Everyone has their own flavor I'm a royal purple man myself. When I bought my RX1 I called them directly because the manual says not to use any oils with "Energy Conserving" The rep I spoke to was very knowledgable and said that the API puts that on all oils that are conforming to certain API standards it doesn't mean they use friction modifiers (royal purple I am not speaking for any others) Anyway. I told him my exact application intention and he assured me I could run straight Royal Purple 5w30 (Motor Oil not Max Cycle) and have no issues. Since I buy it by the case I didn't even need to hit the autoparts store. I've been using it ever since and have never looked back.

Mobile 1 was great for me, I use to use it myself until a dealer sold me some for my street bike. It ruined my clutch because it has friction modifiers in it. Mobile 1 basicaly told me to take a fly'n leap off the nearest bridge and so did the dealer. I went through the whole shpeal with the Better Business Bureau and blah blah blah... Just the way Mobile 1 treated me and the way they handled the situation and the aweful customer service I vowed not to use a single exxon product ever again.
so IMHO RP = FTW!

Ran Wallmart Supertech 5w-30 in all my RX-1's. Sold my last one with 31,650 miles. Run same stuff in my car. Was $1.36 a qt. back then might be a little more now.

had the same issue with my last R1 bike. I used high quality synthetic and ended up messing up the clutch. I was not even thinking when I put it in. I ended up putting a new clutch in the bike the next season.
