Explosions, socks & a gun!

The funny part about all this clutch talk is the Yamaha clutch was one of the reasons I didn't want a Cat. I wanted a Yamaha clutch because I had them before and they were great. I didn't want the team on the Cat because of all the belt blowing and other issues with them. Now it turns out the Yamahas are the ones to stay away from.
Yup! Never ran anything but green. My first Yamaha was 2017 winder. Love it so far. Only reason I did it was clutching. I got sick of the cat clutching and left right when they switched out to team stuff.

How many miles on clutch? Rollers?

Rollers stock YAM?

grrrrr

About 7300 miles. Rollers were brand new.
I've replaced the rollers 3 times so the locking plastic stuff probably went bad. I will buy a bag of new nuts & replace everytime & Loctite also.

As I mentioned this well over a year ago....the clutches that started to come apart back then. Now, more and more miles getting put on is showing the true colors of this clutch, and it's going to truly hurt or kill someone. Mark my words.

It sucks that Yamaha isn't doing a thing about it. And yes, I have contacted everyone I can at Yamaha and they just keep blowing me off saying they do not have an issue.

@stevewithOCD Did you let your dealer know? If you didn't, could you please do so?

I will let them know even though i'm footing this bill myself.
I NEED this sled ready for my 10 day trip next week.

As mentioned a few times now on diff clutch threads...

With the bigger boost tunes, guys need to look at belt after every ride anyway....so feel each roller for play, and as per Steve, check your pins/nuts ect.....the weights that have come out and exploded YAM primaries all seem to have happened when a roller went first allowing weight to swing out. Im not convinced these things wont happen with an older APEX clutch just as easily.

My TP rollers look great after each ride when i check for wobble. Now I only have 2400 miles on my sled so far, and about 2000 are at 270. Some of us feel belt blows can/may contribute to a primary having issues down the road, as shown in some of Terrys pics with the dye where you can see hairline cracks starting.

In the end a Pro4 or TAPP would be a smart move for longevity, especially when running big boost tunes. I like the TAPP myself and could see myself maybe going that route next fall possibly. Time will tell.

Just keep an eye on them gang...

Everybody wants to jump on the "it's the clutches fault" bandwagon. There's no frickin roller. Lmao
Sorry this happened to you Steve, expensive lesson to use locktite.

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble but i helped a guy home a few weeks back with that exact clutch problem and it was stock all through. I honestly think the area around the rollers is not strong enough for all of the hamonic hammering taking place. I could be wrong but harmonics can do alot of damage along with the sound. It fatigues metal over time. Not surprised at all this is happening and there may be nothing yoiu can do about it as this sled had 4500 miles and better rollers in it for the last 1500 miles. They need to replace the clutch with something better or offer the Cat clutch and different belt. Just my opinion.

I also want to add that the harmonics loosen #*$&@ non stop as well. I check daily now as I am seeing things come loose way too often.

The cat clutch is no better

The T-Cat had a clutch recall right away the first season if I remember correctly.

So if he had the "exact same issue" his roller was completely missing also??
If so there is the problem. I agree the hammering from the harmonics will loosen things up. That's why the locktite and regular inspections are necessary. A better aftermarket clutch that's not susceptible to the harmonics would definitely be a plus, I just haven't seen proof of any failure yet that wasn't due to poor maintenance.

I would agree with this. It’s the HP guys.
I don’t believe that I have a lot of friends with tunes running Team haven’t blown a belt or took out a roller, I have about 2400 miles on a 270 tune and clutch is fine , I check before a ride. Some people just drive them never clean them etc. the only thing bad is black marks on clutch at take off. Wide weights, big rollers, steel spider holding up.

Do you have the updated primary?

You are 100% correct. I only blamed myself & did not bash Yamaha for this. I will replace the nuts every time & Loctite for now on.

Now i never had to replace these rollers with 20,000 miles on my Apex so i WILL blame Yamaha for designing these rollers to last only 2000 miles before being changed which is 2 to 3 times a year for me. NOW that's pretty pathetic!
