Explosions, socks & a gun!

I was running TD Powertrail Stock Muffler tune.
I had Dalton QAY's with no weight in them trying to get the RPM's over 9000 then add weight to bring it down. I believe i'm not running full power. Pulls real good, but i should be over-revving with no weight in the arms. That's another day & another story.

It's going to be an OCD March Madness kids!

Lots of clutch dilemas this year!!

As I mentioned this well over a year ago....the clutches that started to come apart back then. Now, more and more miles getting put on is showing the true colors of this clutch, and it's going to truly hurt or kill someone. Mark my words.

It sucks that Yamaha isn't doing a thing about it. And yes, I have contacted everyone I can at Yamaha and they just keep blowing me off saying they do not have an issue.

@stevewithOCD Did you let your dealer know? If you didn't, could you please do so?

I did read Steve’s other thread which forced me to edit my last comment. Didn’t the self locking nut come unthreaded to make the roller pin fall out?

Correct me if I’m wrong......

You are correct

The funny part about all this clutch talk is the Yamaha clutch was one of the reasons I didn't want a Cat. I wanted a Yamaha clutch because I had them before and they were great. I didn't want the team on the Cat because of all the belt blowing and other issues with them. Now it turns out the Yamahas are the ones to stay away from.

How many miles on that clutch?

Do we need to start replacing rollers, bushings, bolts, and nuts every fall as preventative maintenance?

Yes, I couldn't agree more with what you are saying, but this Sidewinder clutch is a pile....shouldn't even be compared to the other Yamaha clutches prior to the SW

There is no doubt that Yamaha could have beefed this clutch up better, maybe a 4 or 6 arm clutch would have evened out things on big tunes.

But most of the explosions seems to be op error or parts worn beyond their limits. From everything I have seen the big tunes 270 and up is where you need to really keep tabs on the wear. Not as drastic stock or low/medium tunes.

So they release their most powerful sled ever and put the worse clutch they can come up with on it? What sense does any of that make?

Absolutely none, no sense why they changed it.

Best part was when some TY'ers were allowed to see the new Sidewinders in person at the Yamaha Pleasant Prairie location, the Sidewinders that had test time on them had old primary clutches on them and the ones with zero miles had the new Sidewinder clutch. Still trying to figure that one out

Sounds like they tried to lighten the clutch up a bit, maybe to reduce the feel of turbo lag even more.
