Wondering where to go for a long weekend. Would like a place that I can test out the Griz. Looking for some tech riding like steep hills, rocks, stumps, sand, mud, ect.. Most of the trails I've found here in north western Wis are just winding, with small hills no need for 4x4.

I have some mud pits by my house that you can test in...Wausau area... Most of the marked trails have very little deep hole due to them filling back in for the 2 wheel drive guys. Hurley has some trails that get pretty nasty, muddy, rocky, hilly....fun

Yes the dead horse is fun and very challenging. Better have a winch.

To me, the deadhorse it not what it once was.

Here is a post of mine from the WATVA site in early June;

I just rode the Dead horse last weekend. The route has changed slightly when you get near Clam Lake.

The trail was re-routed to go East of Clam Lake, and it then wraps around and comes in to town from the north side.

The bar keep at Deb's said it was changed because the trail that ran along Hwy 'GG' was never really an ATV trail, but just a snowmobile trail that ATV'ers used. Apparently, the local residents didn't want ATV's to run the trail along the hwy anymore, and if your caught on it, they will issue tickets, we were told.

The new route is probably 10-15 miles longer. We made it to Clam Lake from Loretta in around 5 hours. Not alot of water, but we had to negotiate some very rutted, and rocky sections.

It seemed to be more rutted than in years past, but still fun, if you take your time. Unfortunately, the old trail is where some of the best mud holes were.

That's kind of like how they "fixed" the trail from Hurley to Saxon. Raised the grade, installed lots of drainage and culverts, made it real nice for sleds and Raptors but took a lot of the fun away for Grizzly riders.

Oh well, at least we can still ride there. :?

I hear ya, Steve.

Before we first rode the Dead Horse several years ago, the locals all said "You won't be able to go there and back in a day. You better bring extra gas. You will have flat tires... etc., etc." Well, they couldn't have been more wrong. We made it to Clam Lake by lunch with no problems, and plenty of fuel left in the tank. (it's only around 35-40 miles one way) No tire problems either. Now, with the trail reroutes and the grading and leveling and such, you can make the trip with a 2-wheel drive sport quad, no problem.
