Went to Quebec for probably the last weekend to ride and it started out amazing. Nice and cold, fresh trails from maniwaki to devils mountain and chevel. Next day was taking the local trail to st. Ann du lac when at about 40-60mph heard a loud pop and clutch winding up...thought I just blew my third belt ( one at 997miles second at 1400), just after my dealer put the new rollers in and said " good to go to Canada". So I get one of my two spares out and open the side to see that the belt is intact!!! So I'm now confused... I look it all over and in all fairness I know little about clutching...nothing looked broken... clutches were warm. So I started the sled up and all I hear is a grinding. Belt doesn't move...I put it in reverse and low and behold i hear a loud click and it goes in reverse and works! Put it back in forward and nothing but grinding. I can see the spring moving in and out but grinding noises are usually bad so I stopped the sled and got the tow strap out. Towed it to st. An du lac ( lucky by a Yamaha STX DX) only to learn the towns machanic was out riding snowmobiles and the nearest Yamaha dealer was closed on Saturday ( it was about 1:30). So we decided to tow it to our next destination cockanagog... yes that's the spelling and how it sounds to, great place highly recommend. Long story short the owner met us on a dirt road loaded the sled which now goes forward!!! BUT not reverse!!! In his pickup and the next day drove it to our truck and trailer in Maniwaki. Total it was towed on the trail about 40 miles... father said it handled good and liked the seating position better then his STX DX.... sled is going to the dealer this week just need to wash it because getting towed on a dirt road compacted mud in every crack and surface. ....any thoughts on what went wrong? Never been left on a trail in Canada by a Yamaha...and that has been for 20years. Searched the site and didn't see anything similar...
I should also say this is 100 percent stock btx se... and absolutely LOVED this sled...backcountry track is the best. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like it popped out of gear at speed.. usually a sign of a gear issue or a bad bearing on the upper jack shaft. This happen to me on my Viper doing about 90+ and found that the upper jack shaft bearing took a dump.

I was thinking the reverse actuator detent spring popped out but you said it goes into reverse but not fwd. just a thought to look at

If I remember correctly, Yamaha will give you some $ toward your ruined trip included with your warranty.

Yamaha offers up to 250 in tow charges and up to 250/day rental allowance

Yup,like Mr sled said,it sounds to me,just like what just happened two hrs ago to mine, mine backs up only though,i suspect the same thing my 13 cat had happen, lose top bearing in cheap gears,so maybe calling for a hyvo top gear, pricy but worth the money.
