O.K.,
Here is the deal. I have an '06 Apex that is whipped and in need of replacing. I love the Apex motor and after many mods, like how it rides. The main things I don't like are...The steering sucks...After new skiis it steers better but it is really sloppy. The sled is heavy and is more tiring to ride than a 600 or 800 2 stroke...no arguing that.
I have the opportunity to buy a brand new '08 FX Nytro for about $7500 plus tax. I really don't want to get into heavy mods. I did it all on my Apex and am a little worn out from that experience. I really only want to do skiis, studs, and maybe a little nitrous.
The sled I am really leaning toward is an '09 Dragon 800. That sled has everything I want except it is a 2 stroke and I don't feel like dealing with oil and smell and all that crap. Problem is, the Dragon probably is faster, lighter, steers better, and probably has a better suspension for my 240 lbs
I honestly believe that I'll like the dragon better but it will cost me about $3,000 more to get that sled.
...decisions, decisions

I have read alot on the dragon and only thing that still gets me is the realiabilty? who knows how it will hold up. yamaha's may weigh more but i can handle the weight if it is not going to break. the nytro's are a blast to ride and no one can deny the awsomeness of a 4 stroke. my 2 cents

Wayne, Wayne, Wayne haven't learned anything yet? Just kidding you know where I stand. Yes maybe the Dragon is faster but I have ridden the newer Polaris' and my Nytro is a whole more fun to ride. I came off a Polaris and a Cat and this thing still makes me smile every time I crack it out of the hole. Yes the 08's are a little more of a handful to ride compared to the 09's so I hear so you are correct about the steering. My friend that I ride with has a 07 F8 and we both agree my motor is way more fun and I beat them both out of the hole. The difference is I have to fight it a little more in the corners than they do but its not unbearable. I havent done much to tinker with it either so this year I will mess around with stuff. As far as reliability I know how you ride, do you think that 2 stroke motor will be there for you at about 5000 miles without a top end? I do know a guy that has an 08 Dragon that I can get the other side of the coin for you if you want. I can ask him the good and the bad first hand. Let me know.

Kevin,
Last winter I had to borrow a 500 polaris classic for a weekend up in Old Forge. That sled was slow but it was a blast whipping that little sled around. At the end of the ride, I was a lot less tired than muscleing that Apex around all day. I also had a blast powersliding corners and stuff like that. I would actaully love one of them with a big HP 1200 cc motor...now that would be fun
I'm not too encouraged about everything I've heard about the steering on the FX Nytro...even from you. I don't mind putting on some skis but don't want to be pissed if I put new skis on and still hate it. If i'm going to spend $8000 I better like it. I'm sure I'll like that Dragon even though it's more money. I'm not worried about speed/power. I'm sure the Nytro will rock on the trails. If I decide I want more power I'll juice it...or add a supercharger with the money I'm saving over buying the Dragon.
...but, If I don't like the ride, I'm gonna be pissed.

Yeah its tough call being that you are trying to pickup a leftover 08. If it was an 09 I would say there would be no choice. It doesn't feel heavy to me at all, but having said that I havent ridden an apex or anything bigger than mine so I cant compare. My sled feels no different in weight to me than all the other guys we ride with. I just have to fight inside ski lift a little more in the corners, it doesn't stay planted and rail like my buddies F8. But in it's defense I made hardly any changes and just rode it that way, there are a bunch of things that can be done to help settle it down in the forums. So the question becomes if you did get it would all the changes make it corner good enough for you. Worst part is you really need to ride someones that is all setup and cornering good to see if it's enough. That doesn't really help you now though.

i cant really say your going to like it or not ,you really have to ride it and find out for yourself.. everyone likes different things and rides different ways.. all i can say coming from a poo I LOVE MY NYTRO.. alot of people dont like the inside ski lift ,but i like it ..

I and many other 08 Nytro owners hated our sleds when we first started riding them. They are a bear to handle out of the box. But the more we rode and tinkered with, we've come to love the sled. I'm not far behind you on the weight, so I can relate to you about how the sled will handle with a us heavy guys pounding the moguls. The Nytro held up fine for the 2600 miles I rode it last season. Yes, I made some adjustments to the shocks and put on a set of C&A Razor Skis, but now my Nytro handles like a charm. Something you might wanna think about. With the gas prices these days, the extra 5-6 miles per gallon the Nytro will get you over the Dragon will help you out.

Hey Stout: BUY THE NYTRO. If you have any trouble with the sled, the dealer will take care of it. I have o an '08. and the Nytro will massacre a Dragon, or any other 800 class sled, except if you are running over 1/4 mile or so. You will jump over 10 lengths out of the hole and you will pull away until you reach top end, around 95-98mph. After awhile, the 800 class sleds will catch you, and maybe pass you, but that is only after a lonngggg distance. The only stock sleds that have beat my Nytro in 1/4 mile are my '07 Apex and a friend's 1000cc Cat - except long distances like I said. These things are unbelievable out of the hole. $7500 is a steal, grab it while you can, you will not regret it!! Wig

Get it!!! However, I'd work harder on the price. I bought mine ('08 RT-X) late last season (March) and got it brand new, with 1/10th of a mile on it, for $7100+ tax.
So, with the '09s out, I'd offer the place $6700-6800
Plus, you didn't specify is it a Standard or RT-X??
If it's a standard $7500 is WAY too much.
Like posted above, no other stock sled will stay with it to 90 MPH if the Nytro stays hooked-up. And, once setup they carve like a razor.

Well I struggle with you coming off a 2007 Attak, what do I buy FX Nytro (worried about the top end) or XP800r.........
in the end desided on the 2009 Nytro XTX got one for $8500 with the saving over the XP I'm just going to supercharge it!!!!! giddyup

Do you really think if you get the Dragon you are going to leave it totally stock? Think your kidding yourself there, as like me, it sounds like you can leave nothing alone. Yes the 08 nytro needs some tweaking but the foundation is solid. The chassis is the most comfortable truly rider forward sled I have ridden/owned. Work that price some more as stated and stay with team blue, you will be happier in the long run,,,,YMMV
