I am trying to change my track and was following the instructions on the totally yamaha site which has me stuck.

It recommends while taking the chain case off to remove the 36mm nut holding the top gear on to the drive shaft. I cannot budge it at all. I have tried a crescent wrench on the thing and am afraid I will strip it if I continue. The problem is that I cannot control the track from spinning or hold the drive shaft while I am loosening the nut.

My question is do I really have to take it off or can I go to the other side and loosen the drive shaft bearing and slide the whole thing off with the top gear still fixed on the drive shaft? If not is there a tool to get that nut off the top gear to slide it out?

I would really like some help since it's my first time changing the track on the RX-1.

Put a wrench on the Drive Axle to hold it. Or insert key in key way on shaft with nut and use a cresent wrench to keep it from turning. Cresent wrench will wedge against key and shaft.

Put a pipe wrench on the drive shaft and let it go up against something to stop it from turning. What are you doing using a cresent wrench go buy the correct socket and do it right you will have to tighten it up again.

Well let's talk about that last comment. How in the world would I use a 36mm deep drive socket (would need to be at least 3 1/2" long) and grab the remaining drive shaft with a pipe wrench? The shaft would be inside the socket. I am not excited about leaving deep scratches in the shaft from a pipe wrench either. If I did get such a socket how do I keep the track from rotating?

You are correct in that I should get a 36mm wrench instead of a crescent wrench. That is one crazy big wrench!

Any more ideas?

Put it on the shaft inside the tunnel. I always just put the key in and use a big cresent to wedge the shaft. Works great!

Remember, that secondary clutch on the other end of that shaft is nice big mass to grab onto as well.

Yamaha makes a special socket and Micro Belmont also makes a 36mm socket for this purpose in particular. When using this big socket on an impact wrench with a buddy holding the secondary, the nut usually pops right off.

There are several shafts on the sled, only one of which is the driveshaft. The driveshaft goes through the FRONT OF THE TRACK. The one that the secondary clutch attaches to is the JACKSHAFT.

Jack_Shaft: Does Microbelmont still exist? I can't find their website.

Seems like they have not bought into the online side of things and concentrate more on shows and catalog sales.

MPI also sells the sockets, should be off backorder by now.

I use a primary clutch spanner wrench but put it on the secondary in between the helix towers.
