I use sledstarts kits and Kurt has always advised me to pull the shield completely off. Worked great on my attack and works great on the Viper!!

I did a lot of testing with HID illumination when installed them in a Nytro. Not to disagree with Rock but I found that totally removing the shield allowed to much light to the lower reflector causing a lot of scatter and glare. Running just the lower portion without the nose cone removed and the notch widened gave better illumination on the trail. Again, I haven't tested this in a Viper yet. I don't think Rock ever said to remove any deflectors. He's smarter than that
