My sled has 400 miles on it, The oil has been changed once but it was changed with dyno oil because I didn't feel the motor had been run enough to switch to full syn. My plan is to change the oil at 800 miles to full synthetic, probably Amsoil 0W40.

Is this an appropriate amount of miles to run it before switching to full synthetic motor oil???

oil

it will vary with other people, i would run oil you have in it for a 1000 miles
if the filter was changed, then put amsoil 0-40, i don't race so i don't use thinner oil, my sled weighs 700lbs and i weigh 260lbs so it' not a racing
combo.

not sure what the 10s come with from factory, but i know 06-09 apexs came with 0w30 SEMI yamalube.

for break in,IMO it all depends on how you rode it....I beat the living hell out of my motor the first 600 miles, lots of throttle varying, lots of "engine breaking" which is know for SEATING RINGS....this is a tried and trued method on Motorcyles, but alot tougher to achieve on sleds since we have no GEARS or manual clutches like bikes.

if you rode it hard, rings should be seated by 500 miles im guessing...but running semi oil LONGER wont hur anything at all,it will help things seal up better IMO....

many synthetic oil guys will tell you their synthetics will break in just fine, but im not sure i buy that...especially ones with lots of zinc/phos for antiwear.

just be sure to change out filter at 500-600 miles to get out any debris from the engine factory build

I've always broken in my sleds hard (be careful not to overheat the engine) and switch to synthetic oil at the first factory recommended oil change (500 miles.) Be sure to change the filter also. After the first oil and filter change, I just change the oil at the end of the season.

I try and wait a few oil changes around 1500 miles and then go 100% syn oil I was told by a old record holding hillclimer from montana that you should try and have the ring seated real good also said some chaincase seal did not like 100% syn chaincase oil and weeps oil and gets low old wifes tail dont know if its truth tho. lots of old timers use atf oil for low cost I always thought spend 10.000 on a sled spend the money for good chain lube I still run 75 wt gear oil never dropped a chaincase in 200.00 mile lots of sleds
